A timely mowing of the vegetation in early spring helped the asters survive and overtake just about everything else. gradually getting other things to take over and crowd out the grass.

Last autumn I waited until the asters had gone to seed and all was dying back...then ran the lawnmower over it. Early in the spring, just as the grasses were about to get the upper hand I mowed selectively, missing the best patches of asters...and getting as much of the grasses and solidago as I could. That reduced the size and vigor of the solidago...which made it the same size as the asters...about 24 to 30 inches tall. Hope a repeat of the strategy will work again.

Wow Lori , what a spectacular site , you have obviously worked out the best method to achieve this lovely meadow , they do a similar thing on the road sides of the motor ways here they wait until the cowslips / primroses also several other variaties of wild flowers have seeded before mowing the banks I have noticed how the plants are spreading further along the road sides they look a picture in the spring ......

I've never seen Asters growing like that, what a beautiful sight. Well done at controlling the other plants Lori!

It came to me this morning, when I looked at the meadow...now all has gone to seed,it's shades of brown and gray...that the early part of last November was very warm and sunny...and I was able to wait to mow until well into Nov...so perhaps that's the key. We had our first snow on the 17th of Nov. last year.
Oh to have a cowslip or primrose roadside! Only in the UK, Amy. lucky you.
