Early Oct.

I have grown a mixture of all kinds of begonias this summer, including 'Semperflorens', which I have very ambivalent feeling about: They are superb performers undoubtedly, but very 'municipal', I feel. They automatically remind me of Council plantings in public places, shopping parades and suchlike. But I have found that when grouped together with other types of begonias so as to blend in with them, I am able to feel more positively about them. They all seem to be flowering more abundantly now in late Sept/early Oct than they have in the previous weeks. This looks like being their absolute time of peak, now in the cooler autumn. I love them so because slugs ignore them and they bloom on until late. (In the foreground are some very young ornamental purple kale, hopefully to give good winter colour). ... I must get some more of those little pumpkins, so as to put some more orange into this 'painting'.

Jonathon what a fantastic display, tell me please do you save the begoinias for the next year, we have grown them this year for the first time and we have had a lovely display, my husband is desperate to save them and already has a box, do you know if they could be packed dry or would they need some soil around them in a box. hope you can help.

Beautiful display of flowers.

Hi Yorkshire, I have never stored begonias over winter, although I am certain that it can be done. I suppose I ought to try it. But they usually finish flowering when the first frosts put an end to them, so I suppose it would be necessary to have them up before the frosts. I have a feeling people put them in trays of sand or something, I'm not sure what. 'How to store begonia tubers over winter' would be a good question to put on the questions page. And a very timely and seasonal question too. Sorry I can't help you more, but I'm sure someone can.

Thank you Sanbaz.

Hi Sanbaz, No, I never eat the squashes. They are there 12 months per year, and only occasionally rot. I love it when I can add the pumpkins too, and they are speedy rotters.

You'll laugh at me. I haven't a clue what to do with one. Do you take the gibbets out?! Actiually, I sometimes buy butternut soup, which is very nice, so I might enjoy a roast one.

Wonderful display Jonathan! I hope the weather allows you to keep it going much longer. I agree about begonias but it's probably because they are so adaptable that they are used so widely in public gardens They get no diseases, no bugs, not fussy about soil or position and always deliver the goods. They may be unexciting but no plant is perfect! They definitely have a place in my garden too.I love your 'painting' :o)
