Chiffchaff

Chiffchaff

A new visitor to my garden, kindly identified for me by members on GoYs sister site. He stayed for about an hour late one afternoon chasing and eating tiny flying insects. I was relieved when he took a rest for few seconds :)

Lovely to have in your garden...

He/she is cute. All puffed up against the cold. Interesting to have unusual birds in the garden at this time of the year Gee. My Fieldfare has decided it would fare better in a field, and has flown off and left a half eaten apple.

Thanks for replying to Katarina, TT. I never thought to explain further!

I searched through a couple of books and the RSPB site, Amy, and still couldn't identify it.

It hasn't been back, Dorjac, but I live in hope :)

He's antics catching the bugs was very eye catching, Neellan, I thought there was something wrong with him at first!

We only get them this far north in the summer and and in recent years. You hear them before you see them because of their distinctive chiff chaff sounding call. I had no idea what it was until I saw it on one of those bird watch or Spring watch programmes. Even then I would not have been able to ID as they are like lightening.

Never seen one in the feathers , a treat for sure.

Wondered if your Chiff chaff might have returned Gee. If it does come back tell him we have lots of midges bouncing up and down in our garden, even on the coldest day, and it can have a gourmet feast of tasty treats. Our little wren is ever present now.....I see it here I see it there, almost like a Robin.

Very sweet little bird Gee, it's such a treat to see an unusual one around the garden isn't it, we've had a female Reed Bunting on the coldest of days, she likes her own space, flying into a Buddleia if any other birds come near, once they're gone, down she comes again right up to the kitchen doors.
