We get a lot of these also, with all the pines in the yard. Have you also seen the White Breasted Nuthatch? They are just a little larger.

Glad you like my winter entertainment guys...lol !
Yes Wohibuli, we have the White Breasted Nuthatches too, and in my opinion they are the best looking of the nuthatches, only problem is, they are also the fastest..lol. They swoop down and grab a sunflower seed and are gone before I can blink an eye ! I'll have to go outside one day and see if I can get a shot of one walking face first down a tree trunk. But I'm not gonna hold my breath until I get one...lol

LOL You are right I suppose Flcrazy, the brown headed just don't seem to be afraid of anything or anyone! There must believe they are SuperBirds and nothing can catch them! LOL

You have taken a great shot. He is so cute. I've never seen a brown headed one.
We have white-breasted nuthatches. We had a snow day (teacher's joys) on Wednesday and I had a ball taking bird shots from my kitchen window. I haven't seen my nuthatches yet this winter.
Thanks for the bird photos, love them.

"Running up and down your tree" - are they the same as (or related to) our Tree Creepers? Haven't seen them in the garden for ages. Maybe they've all emigrated to warmer climes.

Glad to hear you had a break Readybythe pond. The birds do seem to jump into overdrive when it snows, and are very entertaining to watch. I can't wait to watch the birds here when we get our first snow. Everybody and his brother will be after the birdseed...lol. It will be interesting to see who gets top pecking order at the bird table this year.
I don't know Magnoliatree, that will be something good to research later. I only know that our white-breasted Nuthatches can be seen hopping headfirst down the trunks of trees in search of insect food. They also frequent bird feeders and take sunflower seeds off to the side of a tree, where it wedges them into a crevice and hammers them open.

~I had a pair of Nuthatches in the garden yesterday eating peanuts~they are gorgeous!
Thanks for putting your bird photos on Jerrie!

The brown headed is a southern species, while the white breasted ranges all the way into northern Canada. So it would be unusual for them (brown headed) to be in NY, just as it is rare to see the white breasted here. I think the european creeper is probably related to another US bird called the Brown Creeper.

Another fantastic picture, well taken, love the nuthatch.

Thanks Arlene and Dotty,I have to take pics of something, or I might start having withdrawal symptoms....lol, not any flowers out now in my neck of the woods ..;-)
Thanks for all the information Wohlibuli, now Magnoliatree has an answer to their question, don't know that I've ever seen a brown creeper. Will have to google a pic of it to see if it looks familar. I had no Idea the brown headed nuthatch was the common southern standard, and that the white breasted one was more rare in our area, great info !
