Anyone fancy a dip ?

Well think I know what I'll be doing today, pond clearout, where the heck did all those water soldiers come from, think I'll need the wetsuit :-)

It looks lovely perhaps I should get one do they clean the pond.

Don't know if they clean the pond sixpence, I'll have to google that, they flowered for the first time this year though, lovely little white flowers, only put three in so they multiply pretty quick, sink to the bottom in winter.
I've made a start piles of weed on the edges, flippin parrots feather, now that I didn't put in so don't know where it came from , the fish actually have some space to swim now :-)), off to do a bit more now.

Thats probably why its so clear this year then, thanks for that Sixpence, I won't take too many of them out then :-)

Your welcome no I would nt either, if I hear of an army of soilders taken over a house in Lincoinshire I ll know its yours lol. I ve just found out its best to leave as many as you can in, as the outer perimitar ones will die but protect the middle ones in frost as none are hardy as a garden centre chap has just informed me when phoning them.

That is amazing ! Really special pond

Thanks for that Sixpence :-)
Wish everything in the garden grew as quick as this Lulu, spend half my life raking weed out of here, lol, nice to see the lily on the bottom right has emerged though, we repotted it a couple of years ago, the ponds around 8ft deep in the middle and hubby had this bright idea of sliding it into the pond on a plank of wood, neither of us fancies going in !!!!! the plank bent and it flew of the end to the depths of the pond, wanted it on one of the ledges that aren't so deep, no sign of any leaves last year so thought thats the end of that, but this year its come back and flowered, god knows what we'll do when it needs repotting again though.
Thankyou Paul, glad you like it, the fish seem to, only started off with 10 must be well over 100 now, they're like piranhas at feeding time :-))

lovely pond simbad....ive only a tiny one... ive a few water soldiers as well, they do take over dont they.

Love your pond Kathy. Dont it stink when you do the clear out. Ponds are hard work arent they but so nice at the same time. I put a water soldier in my pond last year and it's still sitting on the bottom, did yours initially? Hope mine spread like yours. So much pond weed appears from no where, think it comes with new fish or birds. We put 50 small mirror carp in our pond a few weeks ago to clear some weed ..... not seen one since, lol.
I remember you saying a plant fell in the pond Kathy, so glad the lily has emerged.

4 Sep, 2011

Yes I was amazed Lulu as you usually have to lower them gradually on bricks don't you.
Thanks Holly, they certainly do worse than the flippin rabbits.
Thanks Dawn, yes its a rubber glove job isn't it, bet you have to have waders too with your pond, yes my water soldiers were put in 3 maybe 4 years ago this is the first year they've been totally on the surface like this and flowered, we seem to have escaped that horrible green stuff that floats on the surface, (whats it called having a senior moment), this year.
Aaaw glad you got some fish for your pond, they do tend to disappear for a while don't they, they'll probably emerge twice the size, ours seem to grow so fast I must feed them too well, lol.

You're right, I do have waders ... that leak, lol. Its a bi-annual job, getting in the pond. Got a really good roundup aquatic weed killer now, safe to use around fish and wildlife and doesnt pollute the waterways, spray it on the reeds and bulrushes, works well.

Thanks for the water soldier info, mine should be on the surface in 3 years time then haha.

Are your thinking of duckweed, i dont get either thank goodness or blanket weed.

Think the carp are on tne bottom munching away on tne weed, at least if I cant see them neither can the heron.

Kathy, do you know what water violet looks like, I set a plant last year and cant remember what it is, a mass of leaves like green bottle brushes, not sure if its water violet.

Didn't know you could get aquatic weedkiller Dawn, you learn something every day, handy to know although my ponds nowhere near your size:-).
Duckweed thats the one had loads last year, no sign this thank goodness.
Oh dear remember seeing your picture of the heron, mind you your ponds large enough for the fishes to find places to hide isn't it, we've never had one here, yet, the pond has some quite large trees near it so don't know if that hides it from view when they fly over, the neighbour has one regularly.
Mmm never grown water violet so don't know what it looks like sorry, put a piccy on sure someone'll know :-)

Thankyou Homebird :-))

Hi Kathy, glad the heron gives you a miss, what a blessing. Gone through my old receipts and I've ID'd that plant ... not water violet, no idea where that is - think its an oxygenator, Hippuris vulgaris (Mare's tail). Ps. That heron you saw of my on other pics is a plastic one, lol ;)

6 Sep, 2011

Lol Dawn, I really must wear my glasses more, my eyesight,I remember saying hello to one of those life size cardboard cutouts in Boots once, kids still have a dig about that.
Glad you id'd the plant just googled your plant as when you said mare's tail I thought it was the stripy green one I have but thats equisetum (horsetail).

6 Sep, 2011

Lol Kathy. Have you been to B and Q lately and seen those Alan Titchmarsh cardboard cut outs at the entrance to the garden section, shock me every time.

6 Sep, 2011

Oh god its a good job you told me Dawn, our local Focus has been taken over by B&Q and opening mid september, if I'd have gone in and seen him I'd probably have got the autograph book out, lol.

8 Sep, 2011

Lol Kathy, when you go in and see it, you 'll know what I mean.
