Thanks guys but unfortunately it's a different flower to the one on the packet of seeds. Oh well, this is nice too.

Grown from seed Alex?

30 May, 2012

Yes...I gave loads away. I have three in the garden.
Now for this years surprise.......I have two more types from seed.....wonder what flowers I will get???

Fab! I've only ever managed to grow the common variety. You've done really well to grow them from seed Alex!

I was thinking about ordering some tropical passion flowers...I couldn't leave them out all year though. Are they easy to grow from seed?

31 May, 2012

Passiflora are notorious for reverting to a parent from seed. This looks an interesting bloom though Alex!

love these - they look so complicated like clockwork or something

another lovely shot Alex..

Are there any passiflora which are actually poisonous or will do you harm if you eat them? I mainly grow Passiflora edulis, but have recently established some P.incarnata plants and would like to try more of the decorative species... as long as I can eat them!
KarenFrance, P. edulis grows well in a conservatory here (unheated) which seems to be almost frost free (surrounded on three sides by large stone walls built into the slope above, (thanks to some 19th century French artisan!) I just put on a polycarb roof and reclaimed windows at the front, but we get to eat a lot of passion fruit in a good year. I tried P.quadringularis (the large orange one) once but it didn't make it through the winter so needs higher temps.

Bertiefox;
The unripe skin and pulp is high in cyanide in just about all Passiflora species. Also, the foliage can be rather harmful, or at the least, uncomfortable and messy!

P.quadrangularis will need at least 10°c to survive.

The fruit of P.antioquensis is said by an online acquaintance in NZ to be really exquisite, but we never got it to fruit last year.

Bertie, you might like to look at Fleur des Tropiques. They have lots of passion flowers and some other 'utiles et comestibles', as well as some beautiful flowers, trees etc. They are in Île de La Reunion and so use La Poste. I ordered nicandra seeds from them last year and they were very quick. They also give advice re hardiness. I'm thinking about sending for a few more things.

Karen, they are very easy to grow from seed. This one bloomed last year as well. I keep mine in the garden. How bad are your winters?

1 Jun, 2012

Thanks Meanie, interesting yes. I was really expecting someting else...if you remember from last year. Oh well. Now waiting on my other two, I just hope to be nicely surprised.

Thank you Paul and Sl. ;o)))

Wow, look at all this info on passion flowers. ;o)))

Our winters are never the same, Alex. This year (although I wasn't here) was really mild until the end of Feb...then it dropped to -15/20°C for the best part of two weeks! That was when I lost loads.

Got plans for this year, though!! ;)

1 Jun, 2012

Wow, that is really cold.
Oh....what are your plans???

1 Jun, 2012

Green-house. :)

Just exactly how easy are Passion flowers to grow in Corfu... I was given 14-18 months just to get germination! lol

1 Jun, 2012

Blooming heck!

1 Jun, 2012

This one I sowed the winter of 2011 in the garden with flowers summer 2011! Easy.

1 Jun, 2012

Lol, sown direct in the garden no fuss or messing?

1 Jun, 2012

No, not directly in the garden.... Started off in the house the normal way..bla bla bla, cover with plastic and all that. Spring time in the garden, summer time flowers.

1 Jun, 2012

Is it a fruiting variety?

2 Jun, 2012

I don't think so. I didn't see any fruit on it last summer.

2 Jun, 2012

It's just a flowering one. My neighbor has three passion fruit varieties on a very long fence. I usually get lots of fruit every year.
