Singing hedgehog

I was putting the cats out at 1.00 a.m this morning and heard what I thought was a deluded bird singing somewhere near our front door. I followed the sounds and discovered a big female hedgehog, singing her head off, really loudly, followed by a tiny, single baby, about the size of my computer mouse. She scuttled off down the stone steps to the cellar, where we leave out dried food for the cats and bowls of water, and where most of our resident hedgehogs live and overwinter, and when my husband went down from inside to lock up for the night a little while later, he saw her peering in through the catflap, shouting shrilly at him. This must be at the very least her second set of young this summer, and is probably her third. I just hope junior makes it through the months ahead. I had discovered a big hedgehog about 3 weeks ago in an open bag of compost and put it somewhere else. It was possibly her thinking she’d found somewhere warm and dark to give birth, poor thing, and I kicked her out! Has anyone else ever heard a hedgehog even make a noise? Or sing?

Ive heard them grunting and screaching, but nothing as melodic as singing.
We have a couple that often roam the garden disturbing the rabbits.

Oh I`d have freaked out as I`ve only heard them grunting, yours are really spoiled having a cellar to live in, ours have to make do with the garden...

The ones we have make a lot of puffing noises and like to play with the empty dishes. I have not heard them singing but like all mothers I expect they do to their young? I did notice that the young always eat first, then the adults.

I get a lot of hedgehogs down at the datcha (cottage) and I always think they sound like little terrier dogs yapping.

Never heard of such a thing. I wonder if they do it when protecting their young - as a sort of warning to keep away. I hope they'll be all right in the winter aswell

I've just been down in the cellar to feed the cats, and the baby popped it's head out of the woodpile, so it's obviously found itself a home for the winter. We are having to be very careful to search the piles of twigs and rubbish before our autumn bonfires - OH has just found two more hedgehogs.

A few years ago, we had our wood delivered off the back of a tipper truck. When we were stacking it we found a tiny hedgehog with a big gash on it's back. I took it to the vet and he told me to wrap it in clay and bake it! And then he tended its wound and gave me orphan milk.
It lived for two weeks and then, suddenly and sadly, died. My daughter and I were distraught...
But, yours are in a nice, warm, dry place...and mum's around...they have a good chance! I wish you and them all the best for the winter! :)

Nice creatures. Mind you in some countries they eat them and are considered to be a delicacy. I don't know about Italy but it's better to keep an close eye on them.
