Not bad at all Gnarly.....those are red berries still firmly attached to Malus Red Sentinel. I underplanted it today with 3 pots of snowdrops. When the snowdrops are finished I'll be able to swap the pots for those of spring bulbs then...:))

Good size for the price. Grasses in the pots are lovely too, Janey.

Hi Janey....we share that impulse...to let Pieris jump in our trolley! I did the same last year and sadly, mine died. Could you keep it in a pot, it looks nice there on that bit of patio! :)

We do Karen! I wonder what went wrong with yours? I think this one could do with repotting, thats maybe why it was beginning to yellow? I'm just a bit wary keeping it out in a pot all winter, I suppose I could bury the pot in the soil though so the roots didn't freeze....a bit like the snowdrops I've just put in....:))

...or just give it the shelter of the house wall. I have no idea why mine died...it's a mystery. I suspect it was already on its way out when I brought it home, although it looked healthy enough to me. They aren't easy to kill either! I shall probably buy another one in the late winter as they are so tempting at that time of year!!

It was a good price. All greens in your photo look very fresh, as if it wasn´t middle of the winter, but April.

What's it like in Slovakia Katarina? We have had almost continual waves of stormy mild weather coming across the Atlantic.

It's how the weather is at the moment Katarina, more like April. Wet and mild, the plants really aren't sure what they should be doing....I have a few Prunus that normally flower March/April and they are bursting through now....

I love the colours in your garden Janey, it looks so pretty, no-one would know it was December...

A good bargain, Janey!

When we were in Cuenca, Spain, last year, (a few days later than now), I noticed the Town Council had planted lots of standard Pieris in big wooden tubs along both sides of the High Street which was turned into a pedestrian street a year earlier. With their bright red new growth they looked lovely!

When we were back there last November I saw the little "trees" were still looking quite good in spite of the very hot & dry summer they have there.

Balcony what a splendid idea to standardise them, I imagine they look beautiful in the spring.....we lost all ours this year, some were over ten years old.....so sad!

I bet that was a really pretty sight Balc,.....I think I may keep this one in a tub for a while, especially with your advice Hb, maybe use a larger pot for it, and my soil isn't the right kind either.

Janey, I've uploaded a photo of a couple of the standard Pieris trees in Cuenca from when we were last there - November 2015.

I have several more photos from the year 2013 when they were first put out to line both sides of the street which was recently made into a pedestrian street. I'll have to take some more when we go there again next February.

Ha ha Amy, I know but it did seem set on being in my trolley...:)). Yes I think I may keep it in a pot after all.....

what a bargain! It is so big. I bought one from a catalog, bout five inches tall..Next winter was too much for it. Yours looks so health and bushy. What do you think of Rodie trees? I love the Pieris family, I have been rescuing them for many years. That and the Leucothowe Sp. Such good reliable, handsome useful bushes!

All this mild wet weather we've been having has really suited it too Posy. I do have the wrong soil type for Rodies and Azaleas but love them and am very lucky that there is a country estate near here that has woodland walks full of them...in May they are spectacular!
I shall leave the Pieris in a pot and move it around as the seasons develop.....
