Apple pruning result

In my garden is an apple tree that I’ve had it about 35 years, sold to me as a Golden Delicious. It was not, but is a prolific, tasty & early apple so I’ve kept it.
It’s had various stages in it’s life, in no particular order, TLC, utter neglect, bi annual bearing & woolly aphids to name some

It had gradually become awkward to pick, due to me no longer being quite as agile as I was 30 years ago, and it was starting to snag on the washing despite my pruning

I decided in 2018 to sort it out by drastically removing the taller growth to leave all growth about shoulder high

Here it is 2018 pre saw

This Spring sees the result, I was a bit concerned in case the drastic pruning may have shocked it too much and stopped it flowering unit it recovered. My fears were unfounded

In the background, to the right, you can see the blossom of a large crab apple tree in a neighbours garden, this seems to provide the pollination every year

A bold move that's clearly paid off!

We have several that are in the same boat, so now I will do some drastic pruning later in the year and hope for the best.

I have often found that hard pruning invigorates a plant. Well done ! :)

Isn't there an old growers theory that if an apple tree stops producing you should bang a nail into the trunk?

As long as it isn't a copper nail !
