In Memorium.

My hubbie has been in scouting all of his life and is still very much involved albeit on the money raising side of things now. A dear friend who also was a scout all of his life too passed away recently and has left everyone who knew him bereft.
So heads together and it didnt take long, the team decided to plant a tree in his memory. I trawled through the websites and found the very thing, a native tree ‘Fagus Sylvatica ’purpurea’, a Copper Beech, grown in Britain and described as a ‘perfect specimen with rich dark purple foliage and supreme stature’ ! Enough said, this summed up ‘Brian’ to a tee and to cap it all the dark purple is their troops colour.
My hubbie and I planted the tree so it has time to settle before dedication day sometime in April, they were hoping it would be around St. Georges day, but that is not finalized yet. I also asked on the question page here for advice on its planting, here we go:
We arrive at ‘D.H.Q.’
The hole is dug out
The stake is knocked in
The roots are teased out a little
The tree is planted, bonemeal and compost added too, also a drainpipe is added to enable us to water well.
Job done !
I did help my husband by the way, Lol. and we also cleared all those logs away and generally tidied the area. I only stopped to take the photos as a record of doing so. We are going to take photos when the tree is dedicated and the plaque is placed to mark it, then we can give the family a picture record from start to finish of the planting of ‘Brians’ tree. Feb.2011.

A very good idea. I have a biggish piece of granit stone that I "pinched" from the beach at Rock Cornwall that is dedicated to my dad...who died about 10 years ago. He loved walking along the beach at Rock. Every time I go past it in the garden I always say "hallo dad", I know that sounds a bit stupid to some people but that is my little way of keeping in contact with him.

Oh Rogi, I like that idea, your lovely Dad being a rock, something that will last for ever. Its not at all stupid, I think it quite touching.
Bloomer, thank you, I love this tree too, great in flower arranging alongside pink flowers, simply beautiful.:~)

I love to hear of living plants/trees planted in memory of cherished family and friends. Brian's copper beech will give pleasure to many for years to come. A friend planted a similar tree in memory of her husband who had ginger hair :)

I will echo what Gee has said...living plants/trees win out every time for me in memory of someone who has passed away. You've made a beautiful choice and it will endure for many years as a lovely tribute to Brian and all he gave to scouting.

What a lovely thought and such a lovely tree sorry to hear of the loss of one of his friends.

I think that's brilliant! I hope someone loves me enough to plant a tree for me after I'm gone! :))

What a nice thought, and I just googled "Copper Beech" to see what it will loook like in all its glory, and it is such a lovely tree.
I hope the unveiling goes well, and it will certainly be something to remember the friend by.

Great choice of tree Granmadge, we too did something similar when one of my husbands friends died in a freak accident he was more like a brother than a friend, we dedicated a tree to him in a forest owned by the Woodlands Trust.
