A very Busy: Hornet mimic hoverfly!

I was sitting in the garden just watching, as I like to do ! and this rather large creature took a fancy to my fennel flowers and he stayed for ages so was able to take some good photos, thought you might like to see them.
You cannot see from the photo the size of him, but he was large and rather beautiful. Thanks to Scottish who recognised and found out what its name is…Hornet mimic hoverfly.

Thanks Hywel, I really love watching the creatures in and around the garden it is facinating. i love the smell of fennel too.
Willi, he was huge, I would also like to know what type it is.

Having a wonder around the garden today, I noticed there were bees, hoover flys everywhere the whole place was buzzing. I was lost out there for a short while just watching them, lovely.
I'll have to get some fennel.

Grandmage...could it possibly have been volucella zonaria? I think the images on google are very similar. You can compare size etc.

Well caught Gramdmage , I'd like to have seen that :-), so many insects at the moment, we had a couple of huge dragonflies yesterday by the pond, like something from jurassic park,lol, one was brown and one green with lovely markings,to fast to get a picture:-(

Thanks Mark, didnt have to do much because he stayed a long time so was easy to photograph. Thanks also Simbad I do love watching creatures, from a distance mind!! Lol.

I love to see insects on flowers (I mean the beneficial ones lol)
And I love fennel. It's got a lovely scent.
You can tell that bee is big by comparison to the fennel flowers. I would love to have see it
