Amateur Garden Show

I visited the show on Friday, a show I’ve been going to for 13 years, it used to be a huge one, but this year was very disappointing, last year was bad because of all the rain, but no excuses this time. There was a definate lack of nurseries attending, they had moved the Floral Marquee to a drier location under permanent cover (this flooded last year) so that was a good move, but I don’t think I’ll be bothering to go again, could this be the credit crunch hitting?? (sorry no photos, my camera went on the blink :()

Hi Grindle ~
I think you're right in that the credit crunch has hit various events this summer. I attend charity dog shows and I've seen attendance down at some of these. Where is the Amateur Garden Show held ?

To be on the positive side!...I suppose they thought that a small show was better than no show....I suppose internet buying.....most of us are guilty here....is having a big effect on them.
It will be interesting to see if the credit crunch has affected the Harrogate Show......I am compiling a list.......:))

Yes, it's the one I went to, Tt. I wrote a blog, as well.
Grindle - what a shame I didn't know you were there! We must have passed each other - probably in the Floral area with the plants!! lol
It really was a disappointment, wasn't it! I've been told that the showground put their pitch charges up by 50%, so no wonder the Nurseries and other people who are normally there decided not to go.
This will have a knock-on effect - fewer displayers, fewer people going. Did you also notice that the entrance price was higher - with no concessions, either!

Thanks, Barbara.. I'll look for your blog...

oh that is a shame, would have loved to meet you.
I was talking to a nurseryman that goes to Cornwall and Taunton shows, he told me they wanted £1000 for a small pitch at B&W, that is a ridiculous amount, the showground is getting greedy I think.

Yes, our local nursery was there - he said that they had decided not to go - then they rang the showground two weeks before, and there were SOOO many spaces, they got their pitch for the same cost as last year!!
Are you going to Malvern??
7 Sep, 2009
I'm not surprised, I think this show might just die out if they're not careful.
Yes I'll be at Malvern on Saturday, I think Louise is going too

You're now the second person i've heard say that about this years show :(
Last year we thought it was just the weather affecting it but it would appear that this is no longer one to be marked on the calender.
See you at Malvern :)
