25 Feb, 2010

holly just had a look on a grden site at some questions and a lady said if you get straight stems growing from bottom cut them off close or they will keep growing and take over the plant as the straight ones are stronger and grow quiker, hope this helps you

I suppose it's a bit like variegated shrubs - if you don't cut out the reverted shoots, they take over and you lose the colour.
25 Feb, 2010
yes i guess so barbara

Mine went straight after it was planted out, Sanbaz. I could not figure out why but now I know. There are no 'curls' left, whatsoever - but it presented me with eight lovely nuts last Autumn! And it has masses of catkins at the moment.

A lovely big healthy looking shrub Holly ........
25 Feb, 2010
nice you have nuts and catkins ponty, shame no curls though :o(
25 Feb, 2010
ella looks a bit wary

Mine grows lots of straight suckers and if I miss one of those it shoots up so I try to cut them off. The branches, catkins and leaves are very curly and it's had quite a lot of nuts in the last few years. It is a mature tree though. I'm going to try a clematis in it this year because the summer is it's least attractive time - a green blob of curly leaves!

lovely holly and looks quite large too :o)

Where we used to live in Cuenca, Spain, many years ago the town council went mad & planted two types of Corkscrew Hazels all over the town! They are still alive & growing strong even now. There is a little piece of grass with some of these trees planted in it at the end of the street where we used to live. I saw them being put in more than 25 years ago! They were still going strong when I saw them at Christmas!

Thanks Gee19...
