*Weather warning for the UK*

I have absolutely no idea where to post this blog so I have posted it under gardening as I think it is relevant. I’m sure Peter or Ajay can move it if the need arises

I have just been looking at the weather for the coming week and to say it’s not looking good is an understatement.

There is an extremely cold front moving in over the whole of the country towards the back end of the week with temps. down to minus four (-4) degrees C.

The weather itself is set for sleet and snow showers, fog where it does manage to clear and in between times the rain will be keeping us company.

All in all a good idea to wrap up all of your frost tender plants and perhaps an extra layer for yourself as well!

What do you expect really it is December!

Brrrrrrrr.

Something a bit sunnier to ease the bad news!

For a minute I thought you had changed your mind and deleted your blog, but now I can see the added features, very nice, and thanks for the weather warning :0)

Actually BS I have to admit I did delete it, twice! Lol but I hope the final copy was worth the wait!

I think so Ian...it got my attention!
Also very interesting and useful, if you can delete a blog and re post it, I thought once it had been deleted it was gone!

Brrrr... Winter is well and truly here. The fuschia blooms look very sad this morning. It has come so suddenly after a mild Autumn.
Your blog itself seems very wintry, apart from your little reminder of Spring/Summer at the end. Thanks for that Ian.
I received my telephone call this morning from GP/Met Office to tell people with COPD to wrap up, make sure all medications are ready etc. I think we are so lucky in this country to have an NHS. I just hope my few preparations to protect the less hardy plants works.

Thanks for the warning Ian but like you say, it IS December and we've had it good up till now....if you're a duck that is but not cold. I've never had my summer flowers last till end November before so hopefully that will make the winter seem less long. Looks like some members have lots of frost today, we've got dull and damp as usual! :o((

Useful blog, Ian...

Thanks Ian had heard it myself, my greenhouse is all bubble wrapped and have covered everything with a layer of fleece so hoping they will be ok, got quite a few new baby plants and new cuttings aswell, so fingers crossed hope they will be alright, as have no heating in it.

15 Dec, 2009

I've got plenty of logs indoors for us - and I shall be out with the fleece if my plants are threatened and feeling chilly! Up will go the electricity bills, though - with two greenhouse heaters on! :-(((

15 Dec, 2009

Hi BS. I knew I was going to delete it to change it around so I copied and pasted it back in again!

Mad, You make sure you stay warm and cosy!

Lily, I'm wondering if we are heading for a long, late winter this year?

TT, good luck with the snow and stay warm.

Clarice, I thought you might be ahead of me. I've still got it to do yet :~((

Spritz, If you keep telling me about your log burner I might change my mind about coming to live in your potting shed and insist on moving into your lovely old house and living under the stairs instead! Lol

Sandra, Me to, I love the snow but my old bones don't!

Joanella, I might change my mind about living under Spritz's stairs and come to yours for dinner on Christmas day! I can't resist fresh vegetables. :~))

SBG, I think you are in one of the worst hit places this week. I haven't been out since I collected Holly from school and our car was warning me of the risk of ice then (at 3:15 pm) Brrrrrrrr

15 Dec, 2009

Good blog Ian we are also expecting bad weather, time to cosy up in front of fire piled high with turf & logs also something to warm the cockles of the heart Lol :~)))

15 Dec, 2009

Thanks Ian,we`ve had a very cold day here today but at least thats better than wet everywhere, that darn fog was really depressing, I`ll have to sort my heaters out for the greenhouses........

15 Dec, 2009

Thanks Mobee and Lincs,

It's only going to get worse :~(( Apparently we are heading for one of the coldest winters on record, but don't forget that in April this year they were predicting a 'BBQ summer' so I for one will take it with a pinch of salt and see what happens.
As I said in the blog it is winter and winter does what it say's on the tin!

16 Dec, 2009

Don't even THINK about a very cold winter, Ian! It makes me shiver......:-(((((

16 Dec, 2009

I know what you mean Spritz. I'm sat here with a fleece on!

16 Dec, 2009

I've got to walk Henry - he won't let me forget, that's for certain, Ian! :-(((

16 Dec, 2009

Good luck with that then Spritz. Brrrrrr

16 Dec, 2009

16 Dec, 2009

had a bad frost today here ian..... and my daughter in surrey has just phoned to say they have snow and it is settling on the ground......... BRRRRRRRR

16 Dec, 2009

Why does frost look so beautiful, and then go and spoil it by being so cold?? Not fair! Lol!

16 Dec, 2009

Hi Lily, I hope it looks beautiful but your tucked up nice and warm!

Holly, I think it's making it's way north. Brrrr

Hi M. I agree, have you seen that 'ice' hotel they build every year? I only have one question, WHY?

16 Dec, 2009

Hi Ian just caught up on this ,thanx 4 the warning i checked My Local Weather & it says Heavy Snow here on Thurs&Fri with Sunshine @ wked ! :D

16 Dec, 2009

Keep well wrapped up then Jacque! :~))

16 Dec, 2009

YUK. I hate snow! :-(((

16 Dec, 2009

I like to watch the huge big flakes fluttering down through the nights sky being lit by the street lights ........... While I'm tucked up nice and warm!

16 Dec, 2009

Ooooooo Spritz snow is Sssssoooooo Pretty & Great Fun when your wrapped up outside playing with the stuff ;) lol

16 Dec, 2009

I love snow but not so keen on frost! It's been very, very cold here these last two days and my daughter has just rung to say it is snowing about 6 miles away where she works! I am a bit worried about my new Coprosmia plant - I think I will put some newspaper around it tonight just to help a little.

16 Dec, 2009

It'll need more protection than that, Gee - if the temps. go under zero!

I wouldn't want you to lose yours like I did last winter. :-((

Sorry, Jac - I STILL hate snow! :-((((

16 Dec, 2009

It is in the greenhouse, Spritz, and I have wrapped newspaper around and under the pot, which is standing on decking. I haven't enough paraffin to put the heater on tonight. Any other suggestions to keep it safe overnight would be appreciated. Would it help if I put the pot into a bigger pot and stuffed the gap with newspaper?

16 Dec, 2009

Have you got any bubblewrap, Gee? That wrapped round the pot would help to stop the roots freezing - or else several layers of newspaper if not. Any fleece to cover the foliage? I wouldn't put plastic over it, though. Newspaper again.....
It should be OK with that sort of protection.

Good luck!

16 Dec, 2009

Thanks, Spritz, I have just come in from the greenhouse. Went out armed with bubble wrap, newspapers, stapler and a large torch! Like an idiot I dashed out in my slippers so I need bubblewrap now :)

I will post a photo later of the end result. Just hope it is enough until Friday when I hopefully get some fleece and another can of paraffin. Just had a thought, would it be better in the shed, although there is no natural light in there?

16 Dec, 2009

You're not alone Spritz, I HATE snow too and always have, even as a child! :o((((

16 Dec, 2009

Snow is so beautiful to look at from the inside, love to take photo`s before it gets walked on then I can admire from the sofa.,lol.....Blimey I`m getting old (SIGH)..

16 Dec, 2009

I agree LL, we have had a really heavy (Blizzard?) this afternoon and we HAD to go shopping. It was freezing c-c-c-cold and very dangerous driving but we got there and back in one piece. I'll ad a photo as soon as I get back from school!
