Lovely Jacque rather glad its not the Eagle owl thats the commonest as they are huge.Beautiful but would decimate wildlife and put native owls at risk.

Would think Tawny owl probably our commonest or Little owl.See both pretty regularly esp. little owl as hunts during day.

What a lot of owls!! In the summer we hear a scops owl. I'm not sure whether you get those in UK.

I heard a scops owl in Kazakhstan during my holiday there in April. We nicknamed it the squeaky bicycle bird!

There is usually an owl out and about here at night you can here him all the time.
Last year late on we heard a commotion outside and he was sat on the top of the telegraph post in the front street scolding next doors cat-really going for it.he eventually flew off but didn't seem a bit worried by everyone out to see what was going on.
We went to world of birds near Capetown and they had owls fom all over Africa and Europe including ones that had been picked up injured and brought to them from everywhere! They also had some huge vultures!
We have some fantastic pictures too.
It's good that someone cares enough.

found the remains of what i think was a baby barn owl in our garden last year , all that was left was small white feathers , very fluffy and lots of them.sad really , never seen a barn owl , or any owl other than in captivity , and then find that in the garden!

When I lived in the old cottage there were lots of woods in the area and I could hear owls all the time. I haven't heard any since living here. I miss them.
Sorry I can't look at your photos. I have a bird phobia and can't get over it.

We back onto golf course with woodlandy bit we hear owls but never see which is a shame as never seen one wild, however whilst on subject of owls we were out in the garden the other night looking at stars romantic youd think until we heard the most horrid scream/squark very loud and seemingly close by that, that was the end of that the outside light was slamed on for nothing to be seen the noice carried on for several seconds but seemed to be moving away at first i put it down to owl but not to sure any ideas i'm hoping this wasn't owls tea and not the owl itself.

My fave bird, the Barn Owl, the Environment people in our area are putting up Owl boxes and towers on the edges of the village for over wintering and nesting, so hopefully next year we should have more in our area.

Jacque ~ I love listening to the owls. Last Summer I came out one morning to one floating in my swimming pool and I made sure I covered every night after that.

I've just noticed the owls getting vocal around here - I suppose its because dusk is so much earlier (BOO HOO) and I'm still walking the doglet at 6.30ish. Its usually the Tawny Owl .

Lovely sound tho - always makes me feel a bit wistful.

Hi Jacque - know I'm a bit late on this! I believe Tawney owls make the too-wit-too-woo noise (it's in fact two owls - the one (can't remember if it's male or female) says too-wit and the other answers too-woo). Also common are little owls - I've never seen one in Herefordshire (tho I hear them quite often) but when I lived in a village in Essex I saw them all the time. They are So sweet! Little dumpy things with mad-looking expressions on their faces! They sound just like a cat crying and that's what I thought it was the first time I heard it!

Hi Sid nice to see you back . Both sexes of Tawny owl can make the too wit and too woo sound so either could be answering.Commonly females more likely to go twit when answering the male.

They often use old squirrels dreys or nest in large hollows of trees . Several times nearly run over them as they pick up road kill at night - scary to have one fly at your windscreen .
