Does anyone have a lump of coal for me? You still heat your homes that way yes?

I am all electric heating but I still bring a lump of coal indoors at midnight when the New Year is in. This is a very old Irish/Scottish tradition; the first footer (visitor) in the New Year should bring a gift.

Electric heat would be very costly here. Electricity is the most expensive utility. All our homes in the city and bedroom communities are heated with natural gas furnaces and in some distance out lying areas are liquid propane. The shops here sell mantle type portable fireplaces that look very real but again I would not have one for the cost to run one. Thank you for your answer Ams. Pink floyd, I don't think that many people in the UK do use coal fires as their ONLY heating these days - there may just be a few, somewhere.

Some people have an open fire and may burn coal, but also probably have gas or oil central heating.

We are in a rural area and haven't got mains gas so we have an oil tank which runs our heating, and we have a logburner too.

Thanks Spritzhenry for your input. I remember growing up with my folks in the 50ties, 60ties, and 70ties we had a liquid oil tanker come to our home to fill the big tank in the basement to supply the oil burning fan forced furnace and no other source of heat. I also remember one time it did not make it and we ran out of fuel and another time the tank was over filled into our basement. My home that I live in now has 3 sources of heat. A fan forced gas furnace, a fan forced gas fireplace, and a old fashion brick fireplace which we only use on special occasions like now. Have a Happy Festive Season and New Year!
