Right on Jacque ! Wildlife brings the garden alive and the elements you list above can be incorporated into even the smallest of gardens (or balcony's). ;~)

Me too i sit for hours watching the birds in winter from my windows, and another think to remember is after new year you should all remember to get your leaflet from the RSPB for the counting of the garden birds at the end of January.

Thanks Jacque, I had been thinking of getting some lumps of old wood to put under a thick conifer hedge in our garden which should make a nice home for hedgehogs, your timely reminder has jolted me into action. I've also left plenty of groundcover for the female frogs (I understand male ones usually nestle at the bottom of the pond for winter), then call to the females in Spring.
The rewards for helping them a little are huge, aren't they?

Not so long ago we went to a steam rally and the car park had been extended by mowing a big nettle patch. Concealed in the middle was a large lump of semi rotted wood. I brought this home and put it under the camellias to provide shelter for whatever decides to take up residence. Thanks Jacque for reminding us to make a a home for the wee small beesties.

It takes me ages to wash my dishes as I can see the birds at the feeders they are more interesting than the dishes. I have a bossy blackbird who has claimed the bird bath as his own he even chased the dove. I do the bird count as well.

when i get up i feed the birds before anyone lol, then i sit with my cuppa and watch looking out for my certain favourites being mr and mrs blackbird, the doves and little robin, once ive seen them all i can get on with my day :o))

Jacque, it's a great blog to remind everybody, not only the GoY members, that we have to help all those wild creatures stay alive in spite of the human progress.
We have all the ideas, you've written about, been realized in our garden. :)

In my garden i never use pesticides. The lawn has been attacked by the grubs. The grubs have developed a neich for birds.A number of birds ,specilists in grubhunting are regular visiters of the lawn. The turf has been erroded at many places but i am sure with some corrective measures the turf will be regenerted again. The latest are the Choughs (as identified by Bulbaholic)I will be sending photos of this bird for wild life lovers

I decided not to treat the moss on my lawn, in the shade of a Ribes shrub. Many birds came and plucked at it to use for their nests. They flew off with beaks full of it. I have 2 mini 'woodpiles' tucked away behind shrubs. My border is a bit scruffy and starlings seem to enjoy searching and delving there. I feed the birds. I am trying peat free and peat reduced composts, they seem OK so far. I put most fallen leaves in the shrub borders. Slow to dispear this year as it is so dry. We could all select from a list of things we personally favour to do to help insects, birds and some mammals (not rabbits or foxes) feel welcome in our gardens.
