the last of the tomatoes

I’ve picked almost the last tomatoes now and my husband will make them into a curry with aubergines – also from the appotment! They’ve been excellent this year and I’ve had around 40 kilos altogether. I grew Moneymaker, Romano, Sungold and Ailsa Craig, b7ut next year I’ll leave out the Moneymaker and grow more sungold. They are superb little tomatoes with a divine flavour – great for salads, or just picking and eating straight from the plant.
The tomatoes have been made into passata, pasta sauces, semi dried and also made into tomato relish, using my mother’s recipe from 50 years ago. I have her recipe book with her ‘favourite tried-and-true’ recipes started when she was 18. As she died when I was young it is lovely to use the recipes and feel that she still influences my life in some way.
Many of the recipes need adapting to available ingredients today – or updated ones – but generally they are very flavoursome and never fail.
