Fen weather

I’m origibally from New Zealand, then moved to Cairo and next to Reigate in Surrey. Now I’m on the edge of the fens in Cambridgeshire and I have to say that I found the landscape and weather here a huge shock.

It seemed so bleak and soulesd the first winter and the blistering winds whipping across the fens had even my husband wearing a hat, scarf and gloves.

Six years on I have changed my mind. It’s very beautiful, albeit bleak at times, but the cycle of life is very evident in this part of the world. From the dormant fields with their blackened stalks, the newly ploughed fields, crops peeping shyly through the ground and then bursting into growth. Then comes the harvest and the cycle starts again.

The opace of life is different and the people are too. So friendly and comfortable in their skins, not the racing, striving, must-have-the-latest tv/gadget/clothes that seems to pervade the south east.

Gardening is more of a trial here than Surrey but it has its rewards and I look forward to each season with its changing weather and beautiful wildlife.

We're not all "ok, yah " types in the South, you know, some of us are actually working class, despite what the politicians may have you believe ! You try living for a week down here with the horrendous prices of everything, you'll soon return North. Oh, I've lived in the North too, in a new house where the neighbours attitude was "You Southerners, come up here and buy the houses we can't afford ! ". Yes, I'm having a bad day ! !

Oh dear....I have no experience of southern UK but here near Liverpool in the NW there are loads of friendly folk so won't get embroiled in the north/south divide...lol

I'm originally from Canada and have found life here is just fine :) Shirley...it does seem to be a bad day for you...but tomorrow with your outing things will take on a whole new feel (((hugs))).

Hi W'lass, tomorrow is 'Mum Day' and Saturday, hopefully is an outing !
I'm not prone to having a rant on here, sadly the media always portray Southerners as rich, stand-offish and unfriendly, none of which apply to me ... lol ! I've thrown my toys out of the pram now. : o )))))

Sorry Shirley....I'm wishing the week away here....you're right tomorrow is only Friday...hope you find your mom easier to handle (wouldn't that be a nice treat for you?) and then Saturday will be here for your outing with hubby. So....all the toys are chucked out...good on you, Shirley :)

Never mind,Shirley.I will pick them up for you my friend,...with me being from the north of Watford...I'm sure you must have northern roots somewhere along the line,.how else could we have the same sense of humour...? there,there,..are you feeling more serene now ? Lol.

Good blog Janne, so glad you've been won over by the Fenland charms. I've never lived any further North than London so I'm a Southerner through and through but I've travelled through your area many times visiting parents and sister in Norfolk and always appreciated the different landscape. Not sure I could live with the wind though!
Glad you had a rant Shirley, saves me having to pick all my toys up too! If you're happy where you live who cares about stereotypes and other supposedly 'better' places anyway. :o)))

It's nice you have settled in to your new home area. Everywhere has it's own beauty I think.

I agree Hywel, even in the flat areas (supposedly flat Lincolnshire) not far from me is hills (not as big as yours) but Lincolnshire Wolds are something special.

Yes I like flat areas. It's a change from hills around you all the time. Sometimes they are eery.

Oh yes our Wolds are gorgeous, I`m where the four counties meet so get the best of both worlds, pleased you are happy where you live, I`ve always been here, its nice to visit places but I`m always pleased to see my hometown, cannot imagine actually moving elsewhere.
Hywel you are so right, they can be eerie depending on time and weather conditions.....
