I always feel sorry for poor little old ladies (and men) who just can't manage to do swede. Oh no, I am one. I can't do them now (osteo arthritis) but my hubby can. I also wonder how I and others could manage to open tins or jars. I've got one of those rubber things and a metal one, but my hands just won't grip either of them. Can't use my teeth either!
Well done Joanella, you've got a good array of daggers and swords!

Hello Joanella -
Photo 6, your call was correct definitely! If they're going to be cooked, any floor nasties would be killed off anyway.
Nice blog, I like your style.

Thanks Sanbaz, I'll look out for them. I do dislike most frozen veg though.
Butternut Squash is quite difficult too, especially to peel.
By the way Joanella, hope your cut finger is ok now. Its a kitchen hazard isn't it? I once cut mine years ago when I was making sausage rolls one Christmas Eve. The blood didn't show in the sausage meat!! Ha Ha.
24 Nov, 2009
these are fresh mad, i get them in tesco in the fresh veg section :o)) i never buy frozen
24 Nov, 2009
After my mother came to stay here I would give her the vegetables to peel. She enjoyed it, even peeling the swedes. I was glad because I'm not much of a 'food' person. However I've had to go back to peeling them myself now :o(((
I hope your finger heals soon.
24 Nov, 2009
lol weeding i rinsed them anyway.
mad remind me never to have one of your sausage rolls lol
hi hywel you could always get diced veg as san is suggesting
24 Nov, 2009
Now why didn't I think of that lol - you see, me and food just don't get on.
24 Nov, 2009
there you go hywel, we will get you on your 5 a day :o))
24 Nov, 2009
:o)

Oh, don't we all know this one - I have one sitting in the fridge which I haven't dared tackle yet, having an injured thumb. And Butternut squash, dear lord, it's even worse to chop that up, or maybe as bad, I don't know, and Mad, you don't need to peel squash at all, just give it a good wash. Still got to cut the damn thing up though - it's a job for my trusty breadknife (not the same one I cut plants in half with, I hasten to add, well, most of the time....)
24 Nov, 2009
certainly doesnt seem to be a womans job eh bamboo, lol bout the one in your fridge
24 Nov, 2009
Mad I have the same problem with jars If all else fails stab the lid it releases the seal and the lid comes off.I cant manage plastic packets they drive me to distraction.
24 Nov, 2009
I cant stand turnip, so luckily dont have to chop it up, but I used to work in my dads geeengrocers, & was always asked by the old lady across the road to chop it up for her! I had a VERY sharp butcher's knife that did the job nicely!
24 Nov, 2009
I'm thinking about getting an axe - useful for squash too...
25 Nov, 2009
hi marie, very kind of you to do that for the old lady.
i was on the verge of an axe attack bamboo :o)
25 Nov, 2009
It wasnt a hardship, Joan! I couldnt do it now, though, no wrist strength!
Last time I used an axe, I missed the wood & hit my shin! Ouch!
27 Nov, 2009
Well, its no good, I can't put it off any longer - I'm going to have to tackle that swede in the fridge cos I want to cook a stew tomorrow. Think I'll have to strap my wrists up first...
27 Nov, 2009
good on yer bamboo give me a shout when stews ready, and good luck with the hacking
ooooh marie that sounds painful
27 Nov, 2009
With herby dumplings, I might add... ooh, can't wait!
27 Nov, 2009
Lol! It was, but luckily the axe was blunt, as I lived half a mile from the road! Mind you, a neighbour over half a mile away heard me scream & was there in 5 mins to see if I was ok!! Dunno how he knew it was me! After that, the locals took it in tuurns to chop firewood for me & I was banned from using an axe!!
27 Nov, 2009
love crispy dumplings with stew and beetroot which other half says is disgusting~~
i dont blame them marie you sound dangerous, did you live in a villiage
27 Nov, 2009
I lived half a mile up a hill from a little hamlet, & 3 miles from Blairgowrie! You should've seen me! What a townie! I couldnt carry my chainsaw, & used to use a jig-saw to cut the wood!
27 Nov, 2009
lol not very ladylike is it to have a chainsaw,(like you do):o)
didnt you have a handbag
27 Nov, 2009
Hee hee! Naturally! But I needed the chainsaw too! Dont have it anymore, my dad confiscated it (lol!) when I started trying to do sculptures with it!
27 Nov, 2009
oooo that doesnt sound too clever unless your a lumberjack
27 Nov, 2009

they are such tough little blighters but succumb and become sweet and tender morsels. and i just love it mashed with carrot and a knob of butter. especially with pork and a good thick traditional sage and onion gravy. mmmm
