Noris, the herbalist.

Sometimes Noris chews incredible things. While all commercially processed bones from buffalo skin he quickly buries in garden, he is able to chew plastic containers from yoghurts, milk etc. for hours. Sometimes he hurts gums and tongue with those.
We try to take all such things out of his reach, but sometimes he is just faster.

Recently I have noticed, that he often eats one specific herb, which grows wildly in our garden. Of course, dogs do that quite often for their better digestion, but usually they eat grass. Noris is specialising on this plant. Its name is Galium odoratum (Sweet woodruff).

In animal behaviour nothing is accident. Animals are able “to treat” themselves instinctively. Therefore I looked into the books and I was surprised and so proud of Noris. Many years ago this herb was used onto small wounds in mouth, tongue diseases, sore throats and for relief of “persons in stress”, lol. Now Noris has got his second name, after famous herbalist – Noris the Magic Hildegarda :-)

That's great! Well done Norris....hopefully he will give up on the plastic, but our Willow is exactly the same. Nothing excites her quite as much as a plastic plant pot!

Hi Katarina, I think at 1 stage of our ancestry we also had this ability to treat ourselves, but we have relied too much on scientists to provide things for us, but animals don't know about science, so they just rely on their natural instincts, Derek.

Terra@It is interesting, but French bulldogs are different from other races of dogs. I was said that it has to do with their unique breathing. They concentrate energy on short but vigorous activity. They do not lose time by barking. In fact, he is very fast runner, but cannot do that for a long time. The same is barking. It is very rare. But he "speaks" with us, when we are all in one room, some sort of murmur :-)

Derek@I absolutely agree with you. I also sometimes do things instinctively and they later turn to be the best solutions. Hard to explain that, but old herbalists (or were they alchemysts, I did not remember) had explanation. They said, that for each disease there is a herb in the world. We knew it all, but many years ago mankind started to forget all important things for life.
