Spring sunshine in early March.

I’ve taken this week off due to having adopted little Eve our rescue cat – just to give her a little support and build her confidence and make her feel at home. I have been in the garden almost every day this week, due to the dry, sunny weather, albeit cold. I’ve cut the grass – I’m not sure if it looks better or worse? Tidy, I’d say..and I’ve edged it too which always looks neat.
Trimmed all my ferns except the tree ferns, I’ll leave them a bit longer. Tidied the rockery and the planted slope area behind the log shed. I’ve swept the paths and steps at the slope, and gathered up all the twigs and leaves scattered by the wintry weather and winds over recent months.
Trimmed my viburnum/osmanthus hedging only slightly, which overhangs our neighbours drive at the front. ( just the overgrown shoots )
I felt quite excited getting back out and doing some gardening after months of the odd tidy now and then.
The weather has been very pleasant this past week, bright blue skies and sunshine. Frosty mornings, but this is much nicer than wet, dreich days.
Eve had been viewing me from the windowsill, desperately wanting to be out chasing birds I expect! However, she’ll have to wait bit longer.
Sadly, my bulb collection has been quite poor, a few snowdrop flowers and a few crocus. Still, time for the crocus though, they seem to be sprouting well. Lots of new spring growth on the shrubs, especially up on the hill/bund. Nice to have more daylight in the early evening too!
Anyway, I’ll be working tomorrow, just for one day, then off on Sunday. Next task is to look at laying a small section of turf in the back, but, that’s for another day..

It's good you have got a lot done a lovely photo of the blue sky. Let's hope little Eve can get out soon to explore.

Thanks Julia, thanks Thrup! She is definitely settling in, won’t be long til she’s out exploring! Especially when the weather improves - we’ll all be out! x

You have been busy, its so good to be able to actually get something done Kate, all those raining and windy days were really getting me down, although a lot have really suffered and my heart goes out to them, I haven't got the mower out yet but I made a start on the edging, too spongy still for attempting the lawns properly but a definite improvement weather wise in the last week, hoping it stays that way for a while.
I'm pleased is Eve is settling, you have done right by keeping her company, they tend to hide away otherwise, now she will know that you belong to her, ( notice I understand which away is the correct way to phrase that, lol )

It's great to get outside again isn't it ? The cool fresh air is so exhilarating. I've already planted my carrots & beets Congratulations on little Eve. I'm sure she'll come around in no time.

What a good profitable week Kate! Topped by a week off to encourage a new cat - gets better all the time! If your snowdrops are fairly recently planted and from autumn planted bulbs they take a while to get going so don't despair. If you want more they are better bought just after flowering (called "in the green") when they settle in and flower much more quickly.
May we see a photo of Eve please? I know I'm not the only cat lover on here!

OK call for cat photos! Everybody post your pet kitty.

You’ve had the same weather as us this week Kate. I was outside planting yesterday. Sadly not enough rain today to water them in so I shall have to do it tomorrow. You’ve got a lot done. I still have to finish tidying up the Golden border. But the other borders where I laid the bark chippings last year hardly have any weeds at all, so I’m really happy that I used the mulch. Definitely saved me a lot of work. I planted hundreds of species tulips in the autumn and so far only a few are showing...but theres time yet. I worry that the voles have taken them, but I hope not.

I'm glad you had some nice weather to be outside. We need some fresh air after the long winter. I hope Eve will be able to enjoy the garden with you soon :)

Thank you everyone, very kind! ;-)
Thanks Sue and Sue! The weather has been a nice change from the destroying winds and heavy deluge, especially for lots of people around the country. Dreadful.
Thanks for the kind messages regarding Eve, I think she’s starting to find her way..
Sue, I’ll take note of what you’ve said about the bulbs, it looks makes sense now!
Karen, I hope the voles haven’t been swiping your tulip bulbs, fingers crossed they are delayed by weather!
Thanks Hywel, hopefully she’ll be out keeping me company in the garden when the weather is finer. Hope you are doing ok?
Thanks Bathgate, I think you may have started a kitty cat photo session now!

We sure have, Eileen! It’s been a lovely change. Raining last night and a little today, but, quick turnaround and it’s sunshine again! It has definitely been so enjoyable being out in the garden again. OH trimmed/pruned the solanum glasnevin/Chilean potato plant yesterday as I was at work all day and I had to stick around due to an emergency. He made a good job of pruning, should thicken up nicely.

Not a moment of your precious time wasted, bet you felt really satisfied, its great when you can get outside and enjoy a few hours of blue skies. I had given up on seeing all the crocus and teta tete daffs this year but no up the`ve come a little late but such a delight.

Hi Stroller, I fully agree with you. I find it’s such a wonderful addition in life, as you all do on here.
I’m pleased you’ve seen the spring bulbs in flower, I think mine are just having a lay in, possibly..:-)

Your picture Kate has a striking blue sky. Captures the moment well!

Thank you kindly, Stroller. An opportune moment for me.

Kate you must have had much better weather than us in the South to have got so much done in your garden, I have not touched our ferns and they do look the worse for wear, the winds have shredded them...
It’s strange how some things are very early and others way behind....we still have Hellebores coming out!
At least Spring is nearly here......we had typical March winds and April showers today......but sunshine in between....so things are improving....

Hi Dd, think we tend to get sheltered a bit from the Pennines when the weather is driving from west to east. It sort of fizzles out by the time it gets to the Hull area!
I noticed today the ferns have new fronds ready to unfurl, actually there are one or two on each fern unfurling now.
I’ve left my two tree ferns as they are expensive and I’d hate to jump the gun!
We’ve not had a lot of frost and fingers crossed not the horrific winds and deluge that some people have suffered.
Pleased to hear your weather is improving, it is just lovely down where you are! Beautiful county, we’ve enjoyed some lovely holidays over the years in Hampshire.

We won’t do our tree ferns until April/May ...as you say too expensive to take risks with them!
Hampshire is a beautiful county...we like it, have been here 20 years in June....

It was nice to see a wee bit of blue sky last week and as you say, it was really lovely to get out in the garden and get a few jobs done. A new cat as well that will cheer the birds up :) :) I managed to fit three new fence panels dig out and reconcrete three new fence posts in and then me poor old back told me no more. I cant believe how bored I got and how it drove me to order so many plants, even the delivery driver said to my wife Kim, not more plants and where is he gonna put them. Still trying to work that one out.

Hopefully the weather is starting to turn for the better, Davey! Sounds like you’ve been pretty busy too, however, you’ve been doing some heavy duty work outside!
I know what you mean about buying plants and then thinking where on earth shall I plant these? I often find myself walking around the garden with a new plant trying to find even the tiniest of spots to squeeze it in! Just wish, as I always say, we had a bigger garden.. my partner is the the hard landscaper in the garden, although he’s just said “foreman”..😁
Yes, the new kitty is settling well, but her mouth twitches at the sight of birds on the feeders! Jeez..she’s going to be a right little huntress!

Hi Kate... pretty blossom...
I hope Eve is continuing to make herself at home.

Thanks Terra, it seems to be spreading nicely on the hilly area. Thank you kindly for asking after Eve, she’s settling really well, getting more confident too!

Thank you Arija, I have to agree it is lovely to see some nice Spring weather at last. I like to hear the sound of lawn mowers and I love the smell of freshly cut grass!
