Very bad spring this year

I read that we had the coldest and rainiest April on the record. ….and May was not much better until yesterday. May 21 was finally spring like day. We spent half of it cleaning the mess after very bad wind storm couple of days ago. This storm was also anomaly for this time of the year. We were out of power for most of the day and so was most of this and surrounding islands. Thousands of households lost their electricity.

This is a holiday weekend (Victoria Day) in Canada and so far it is very pleasant. Good weekend to go camping with the kids.

Despite the cool spring the vegetation did well. Did not mind the coolness and wetness like us. Everything is looking fresh. We are just few weeks behind.

In our front several plants are blooming and we enjoyed our lunch sitting amongst it.

Magnolia Susan is blooming well and has lots of buds this year. On a warm evening it sends a lovely fragrance around. Here it is in evening sun.

On the left side of “Susan” a Rhododendron “Hoppy” is opening its buds as well. It is a similar colour. Matching pair.

Detail of the flower.

Intensive red colour of Rhododendron Jean Marie de Montague I planted just couple of years ago. I understand that every red rhododendron is compared (judged) against this red.

Smaller rhododendrons on the right side if magnolia Susan

The pinkish one is R. Elsie Watson . Named after the rhododendron hybridizer herself.

The white rhododendron on the corner is inherited and has all the characteristics of “Cunningham White”;

On the opposite end of the lawn is Japanese maple “Crimson queen.” The crimson is a reference to a fall fiery colour. It is getting to be a fair size now and a home to our many hummingbirds.

Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum ‘Mariesii’ in generally same area

Behind our " dining" table our camellia is still blooming heavily

After lunch we noticed that there is a sailboat regatta on the ocean so I snapped few pictures of these colourful boats from our deck.

I hope that this nice weather will continue for few more days but Andy tells me that it will cool down again.

Ah, so that's where the rain was last month! I can 't remember such a dry spring as we've had. Your shrubs are a picture though - they have clearly enjoyed it Such blue sea is beautiful - we don't often get it as blue as that here!
What a lovely place you live in.

Location is just as stunning as your beautiful plants.

You have a stunning garden, Klahanie, and I can understand the weather is so frustrating for you. In our little bit of southern England we've been devoid of rain over the last few weeks, but now that seems to have broken and we're enjoying positively Mediterranean weather on and off for the last few days. No year seems to be the same.
Beautiful plants and a wonderful setting. I hope you enjoyed your holiday weekend.

Lovely photos as ever Klahanie. We are just back from a week’s holiday by Lake Annecy, France (I will try to upload a photo soon). While there we also had a dramatic storm with hailstones the size of golf balls and rain thundering onto our deck! I really hope your weather will soon warm up for you. x

well it may have been an horrendous spring but your garden is looking as if it has brushed it all off. The flowers are beautiful and your spot on the planet looks wonderful.

Wonderful views of the ocean.

Lovely blog. I enjoyed seeing all the Rhodos, Camellias &
Magnolias. I lived in that acid sort of territory once, in Sussex. They seem to have survived all the rain & wind.
You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful location.

Your garden is gorgeous and although you didn't appreciate the weather its obvious all your shrubs certainly did, you have some fabulous colours and so many blooms, the view is stunning Klahanie.. I sincerely hope you have many more days to sit and relax on the deck..
Lovely blogs and photo's..xx

Despite the poor spring weather, Klahanie, your gardens are to die for! Such beautiful shrubs, trees and wonderful colour! Perfection indeed! A garden for some to strive for. Thank you for sharing and we appreciate your hard work maintaining it all for us to enjoy!

Your place is just so beautiful Klahanie! Heavenly! And the Magnolia and Rhododendrons…superb! I didn’t know about the Humming birds until I started following Magda’s Garden on Instagram. She is another Vancouver area gardener. You are so lucky to have those beautiful birds all year around! My Son has now emigrated to Calgary. Very different from your side of the mountains. Hoping to visit next year. It will be our first time in Canada. :)

As you can imagine, Karen, I feel for you about your son emigrating. But you can be sure he’ll be happy in Canada surrounded by such lovely friendly people!
