Diamonds Aren't Forever

Early yesterday for a short while we actually had some rain, well…..nothing to get excited about, just very fine drizzle really. Inspired by Oddbillie I grabbed the camera, regardless of my newly washed and styled hair (only female members will appreciate the dedication of this….or maybe that’s not so!). Then off I went round the garden again to see what delights Nature had provided.

Net curtain?

Nasturtium

Nasturtium leaves

with a pretty beaded fringe round the edge

Dianthus

Loropetalum “Firedance” with a row of crystal ‘buttons’ down the leaves

Hydrangea petals

Alchemilla, more leaf edging

Pansy

Cotinus “Royal Purple”

Photinia “Little Red Robin”

Marguerites (not sure if that’s the correct name but it’s what I always call them!)

Hydrangea bush wearing it’s best necklace

All these lovely ‘diamonds’ soon evaporated and later in the day, in the hope of bettering some of these shots, I tried to recreate them using a very fine mist sprayer. I failed miserably which just goes to show that Nature is very complex and far cleverer than us (well, me anyway) even if her gifts are fleeting. In future I shall leave the really clever stuff to Nature and stick to the camera manual (yawn)!

I love these photo's,Lily2...what a great idea, and well worth getting your hair wet for them.Lol....just beautiful...

I agree, you can re-style your hair easily but would find it much harder to re-create these wonderful photos. I love the spider web and the Dianthus. Local radio have just given out a weather warning, it's going to be very, very hot, especially between 11 and 4 over the weekend with no sign of rain ! I'm so bored of using the hosepipe now . . . . . . . .

9 Jul, 2010

Lovely photos lily2! Your few drops is more than we had here. Though the sky is dark and rain is forecast, can still see me hosing...:o)

What a gorgeous photo collection Lily and if it's any compensation I agree with the others and they are worth another trip to the hairdressers. Better to have memories like these than a hair-do that will need re-doing at some point anyway.

Your diamonds WILL last forever, well as long as you keep the photos! Lol

leacanthamum is the name lily for your marguerites, i have some and they are lovely and cheery, lovely pics to lily, it looks so pretty when the raindrops are left ;o))

Lovely pics Lily, All your plants look really healthy...

9 Jul, 2010

Lovely photos we've had drizzle all day here plus hosepipe ban from 6am today.

9 Jul, 2010

I would love to have just a little rain any rain. I love your photos. hows the hair :o)

9 Jul, 2010

Glad you like them Bloomer, Shirley and Dylandog but don't get too envious of the drizzle, it was barely enough to dampen the pavings! Yes watering is becoming a real chore now. :o((
You're right there Ian, caught on camera forever! The hairdresser is me so nothing lost there really. Obviously you don't mind getting your hair wet! lol
Thanks Sandra I'll try and remember that, trouble is they keep renaming plants don't they!
Thank you too Doddy,YDD and Clarice, it makes a change for your region to get a hosepipe ban before us but NO joke carrying heavy cans around the garden. :o((
Maybe a ban for you too soon Sbg? I'm glad you liked the photos - the hair's still a bit frizzy as a result but due some attention!

9 Jul, 2010

Great blog & pics Lily. That was more drizzle than we had here! Not a diamond in sight!

Your 'do' is looking fab by the way! ;O))))

9 Jul, 2010

yes always renaming them lily just as we get use to one name lol, its not often i remember anyway haha

9 Jul, 2010

Love em....love em....love em!

You've inspired me now to do some more next week when I'm off!!

Fabulous pics Lily:o))

9 Jul, 2010

I don't have enough hair to get wet Lily! Lol

10 Jul, 2010

I think I've said often enough how much I like the rain. Well you would never get these beautiful photos if everything was dry and dusty all the time would you lol...

10 Jul, 2010

Hi Hywel, you're right there. Just as well you like the rain, living in Wales.....I think at the moment we'd all agree that we like rain too (but not for too long) lol
You men are so lucky Ian, it's OK for you to be bald. One less thing to bother about, wet or not! :o))
Thanks Dan, it looks like I'll have to study that book a bit harder and find out what the camera is REALLY capable of now! I shall look forward to seeing some fabulous pics....enjoy your week off work :o)))
No point in trying to keep up Sandra, just enjoy 'em.
Hi Fluff and thanks. Drizzle is no good anyway unless it goes on for a while and not much chance of that. The 'do' is not looking like it does in the photo just now! :o((

10 Jul, 2010

I'm not bald. I have thick wavey hair

10 Jul, 2010

Oh Lily your photos are magical especially the "net curtain" and the Hydrangea wearing a necklace, well done you !
What make of camera do you have ?
No sign of rain down here, despite my repeated attempts at rain dancing ! lol

10 Jul, 2010

Thanks Val, my favourite is the Hydrangea necklace one too but I'd prefer it to be a bit sharper. Got a new book from 'Which?', very good at explaining and enabling me to understand the camera manual. Can only digest a bit at a time though!! The camera is a Panasonic Lumix TZ6, I'm very pleased with it but know I haven't got the best out of it yet.
Lucky you Hywel, mine's wavy but not so thick these days :o((

10 Jul, 2010

I agree with Ian, Lily ~ you've always got yur diamonds while you have the photos. They are lovely. Well done.

10 Jul, 2010

How I wish it was a WEEK off but alas, I merely meant my normal 2 days, which have been a rarity of late due to staffing issues.

I shall hopefully take some for you ma lady:o))

10 Jul, 2010

Fantastic photos, Lily. Rain, lovely rain, I'd almost forgotten what it looked like!
Hope your hairdo survived too :)

11 Jul, 2010

My hair USED to be all waves but now it's all beach! Lol

11 Jul, 2010

Glad you like my 'jewels' Silverbelle and Gee, thank you both for your comments. Not sure but think there may be some rain overnight or tomorrow, fingers crossed. :o))
Well I guess 2 days is better than one or none Dan but a pity it's not more. :o(( Hope you get some more time off soon to enjoy your garden and your camera.
LOL Ian....still trying to think up a smart reply to that .......!

11 Jul, 2010

We'll have to start calling you Moses, Ian, as there's been a parting of the waves :)

11 Jul, 2010

Oh brilliant Gee LOL. I knew there had to be a good answer to that - well done! ! !

11 Jul, 2010

LMSO Gee, there certainly has been!

11 Jul, 2010

Diamonds in my garden this morning Lily ... not enough to fill the butts tho'!

11 Jul, 2010

Yes a few here too Fluff and empty water butts too :o((

12 Jul, 2010

You're very 'nifty' with the camera Lily...Excellent pics.
And next time you get some rain, can you send some over here please. We are desperate for some now. All we had was 3or4 drizzle showers today which didn't last more than 30 mins in total!! Yet, along the road about 18 miles in Shoeburyness, it rained, on and off for 5 hours, evidently!!!

12 Jul, 2010

Oh, by the way. You've labelled a plant on here as Alchemillia...but it's not like the Alchemillia I know (mollis....aka Lady's Mantle) do you know the variety name??

12 Jul, 2010

Thanks Paul, my photography is improving slowly. We've no rain to spare I'm afraid, just a couple of sparse drizzle showers and a 20 minute shower of light rain so far :o((
The plant is Alchemilla Conjuncta. I've had it for years but never knew what it was until I saw it recently either in a magazine or on GoY. I was surprised as I only knew of Mollis. Flowers are not much but it has a very neat rounded clumps and the pretty shaped leaves have a very narrow pale edging. It self seeds too but not prolifically.

12 Jul, 2010

Thanks for that.I'd never come accross it before.

13 Jul, 2010

I keep revisiting this blog and have now added it to my favourites ......... the pictures are so lovely, very magical. You've done a wonderful job there Lily.

14 Jul, 2010

Oh thank you so much Silverbelle........it's great to be able to share such pretty things with like minded people, they looked even more lovely at the time and I was so glad I managed to capture them :o))

14 Jul, 2010

What a lovely blog and great photographs ! Particularly liked the 'net curtain' ! :~))

24 Jul, 2010

Great pics, reckon you could make a mint selling cards with some of these images - I particularly liked the 'necklace' on the hydrangea, what was it formed of, a cobweb underneath?

19 Aug, 2010

Thanks B8 and Bamboo.......if I remember rightly the 'necklace' was part of the 'net curtain'. Well it was certainly a cobweb on the same hydrangea anyway. :o)

19 Aug, 2010

Well Lily, not only do you not clean your windows,---- you got cobwebs in your hydrangea ! lol

19 Aug, 2010

Cleaning is such a bore Val....yawn......and as for spiders ....eeek. The Hydrangeas are welcome to them! LOL

19 Aug, 2010

I don't mind the garden spiders, its the big black tarantula types that invade indoors this time of year--- :0((

19 Aug, 2010

Makes me cringe just to think of them. :o(( Do your cats eat them? Daisy is useless!

19 Aug, 2010

Oooh Valadel, know exactly what you mean - had one last week, big thing, only just fits under the lager glass I use. Managed to trap it, bit lively I must say, left it for 36 hours before sliding the card underneath and removing to outside,by which time it was much slower, but by no means dead.

20 Aug, 2010

Hya Lily, my cats eat the little ones and flies but to my knowledge they have yet to encounter a "Tarantula".
Oooer Bamboo why do they grow so big?
I could not have left one 36hrs, I would have gone screaming to my neighbour to remove immediately ( which is what I usually do ) just looking at them sets me off !
What a wimp ! can't help it tho'. :0((

20 Aug, 2010

I used to be exactly like that, major freak out with even the small spiders - but then I had kids, and a useless husband who was never there, and you just have to learn to cope. Last time I asked a neighbour to deal with one (ten years ago) in my kitchen sink (a monster) he came in and beat it to death with a rolled up newspaper - not what I had in mind at all, I don't like killing them.
