Claiming Back Space for Flowers and Bulbs.....

The Spreading Juniper near the fishpond was taking over the flowerbed, time to sort it out, that particular job has to be done when my garden waste bin is empty, I don’t want massive branches laying around, the bin was emptied early on Monday morning, it was a lovely morning, what I consider a normal September day, slightly overcast to start with a lovely cooling breeze, just right for gardening especially that particular job…

Out came the larger pruners, gloves and the wheelie bin fetched back and moved as close as I could get it, took a few minutes to decide where to actually start, after careful studying from all sides I chose the back and then worked inwards, it meant standing on some of the planting but I know from past experience they soon bounce back again…..

View from the far side near the fence and coming along the back of the bed ..Still pondering whether to move the edging stones further in, make it easier to mow around the post the dovecote is on…
Further along towards the lawn and another look checking how much more to remove..

Before I started at the front, as you can see half of the ornaments are lost below the juniper, no room to add anything for next springtime….

Afterwards..

I know some of it will look a tad scruffy at first but it doesn’t take long for the greenery to fall into place and hide the cuts..
The hardest part of that job was digging around the plants afterwards, the earth was packed solid.

I will have to do the side that runs along the fence line and over the waterfall at a later date, my waste bin is full again and I have two weeks until its emptied… Phew !!!!! time for a well earned cuppa….

Thankfully the heatwave was over, Monday afternoon, we had thunder, lightning and torrential rain, much needed and it continued until this morning…..

that is a job well done Lincs. What bulbs are you hoping to plant or is it just to allow the bulbs you have in to grow?

You certainly had a job on there Sue! It must have been worth it to see everything it had hidden again.
I have one in the front garden which was there when we moved in.
All of a sudden everything suddenly disapears underneath it.
So well done you!
How are you doing now?
It is a good job we have our gardens, isn't it ! It has helped me as I am sure it must have helped you too!
Thinking of you! xxx

There are a lot already in there Seaburn but I want to add more miniatures plus I'd like more alpines, they do well in that bed think its because it rarely gets disturbed....

Hiya Rose, I'd already pruned the one near the bottom pond, they've been in for over 40yrs so I've done them a few times, its not a job I like because if I'm not careful I get a rash...
I 'm doing alright most days but dreading the winter Rose, I'm luckier than you as I do have Sherryl, we share our house, obviously she is at work during the week so it feels lonely sometimes, Juliet is a teacher so goes back to work next week, I'm not one for going out as you know, its the quiet during the days I don't like so having my garden is what keeps me going....

You did a great job there, Lincs! Now you will be able to sit back & enjoy your hard work! 👍

I have a small new project in mind for the autumn and it gives me something else to think about.
I still have good and bad days and is 5 months since I lost Rick which seems like yesterday!
Although my daughter doesn't live with me, she is only a phone call away.
As well as a great grandaughter , I now have a great grandson so am blessed with having such a lovely family.

Thanks Balcony, can't sit back yet, I've been busy helping my daughter on her allotment, it makes a nice change caring for a veggie plot...

I have plans to decorate when the colder weather comes Rose, have to do that in easy stages so it will probably take me ages, not a job I particularly like though, kept getting put on the back burner because Derek really wasn't up to doing it...

Thanks Hywel, have to keep myself busy and don't have to bother about when I do those jobs now as long as the garden waste bin is empty, lol....

Pond and surrounding area look lovely, is the net to stop the greedy Heron's from eating your fish, as with Rose and you, must keep a bit busy otherwise find can get a bit Maudling alone with your thoughts, so dug up all the crocosmia as they were going a bit mad, split them up, gave a load to my youngest daughter, then replanted the rest in a patch where i have lost a few dahlia tubers.
Again, like rose and yourself my kids have been great but evenings with just me and the dog, is when the loss hits you the most, but on the plus side if we didn't love them so, we would not feel the sadness.

I like your post so much.

Thankyou Davey, the net is exactly for that reason, we have had herons fly over occasionally to have a look but I never leave the net off so its out of luck ..
I find it hard some days to stick to any particular job, then I have good days so I keep myself busy, can't sleep though, no matter how hard I've been working my mind races as soon as I go to bed, those are the hours when I really feel lost and lonely....

I had a look at the Coseynest living page above & it looks quite good! But it's based in the USA & some of their conditions are different from ours in the UK.

Exactly my feelings Rose but the weather has turned so lost my excuse for not doing it, sigh !!!!!

Shirley I was very careful, I fell in that pond a few years back, frightened myself to death as nobody was home with me and I struggled to get out....

19 Sep, 2023

Oh Sue, that doesn't bear thinking about. Please be careful and only do this sort of task when somebody else is around to help!
