My Lawns

This has been a particularly difficult summer for maintaining my lawns. They play a major part of my front garden and I like the grass to look good. I have a routine where I weed and feed in spring, scarify and then go to Sweden to work on the garden there. I don’t seed it until I come back in case the young grass dries out while I am away.
As you know, it became hot early on this year and even though I watered the lawns every night the grass seed didn’t take. It was just too hot.
It took until August/September before the grass looked as good as it should.
I am now left with a dilema……..should I put down an autumn weed and feed followed by scarification or should I give my poor lawns a break.
What are all you grass fanatics going to do this year?

I don't see much moss but I thought I might put a tiny amount of weed and feed where I see it. I could just rake the dead moss then.

I've reseeded and fed the grass. It is the moss killer and then the harshness of the scarifying that bothers me.

I've stared at it sadly and though I really must put some weedkiller on it....

We have had to turf ours in several places.....it was so hot, and the lawn literally died!! yours doesn't look too bad Linda, I am sure it will bounce back, if there isn't a lot of moss I would give it a rest!

I hope your grass will be all right whatever you decide to do. I don't have lawns and know nothing about their care, but in some gardens they do look rather pleasant.

Hmm...I’m not sure Linda. As it looks great, I think I’d leave it. I have put lawn weedkiller down on the worst bits of mine, and I will give it an autumn feed. I usually kill the moss and scarify in spring. Its a problem in scotland isn’t it...because its better to scarify in spring here, but reseeding is far better done in the autumn. But I never do anything the same two years in a row, so I’m not the best person to comment! I might kill the moss next month and scarify it lightly after that.

Hi, I think I would leave it alone this year, if you only reseeded in late august, the roots of the new grass wont have had a chance to put down enough root to prevent it being ripped up by scarifying, and wont need feeding, next year you can continue with your normal treatments, Derek.

Yeh! I think I'm with you Derek. The new grass is looking good and I think the scarifier is very harsh. I might just lightly rake the dead grass here and there.

If you are going to scarify and add weed and feed which shoudld you do first?

You weed and feed first as the moss will turn black and you need to scarifying the grass to remove the dead moss.
