Slugs

My Bergenia are flowering but the young leaves are suffering because of slugs. With so little frost I hope this year won’t be bad for pests. A friend in Brighton says they are have a terrible time with caterpillars. Funny how we love butterflies but hate caterpillars.

I know what you mean, Linda…but, I do like a little caterpillar or two…despite they’re munching habits! Eileen is right, of course, in regards to preserving them.

As the song goes "You can't have one without the other!" We all love to see butterflies but to have butterflies first you have to have caterpillars!

Strange to note that my Snowdrops have not suffered slug damage this year even though it has been mild. Last year (another mild winter) they were all eaten away.

That is so true re caterpillars and butterflies. But we have to have the caterpillars and as we know, sadly, moths and butterflies are in such a decline due to the use of sprays to combat the caterpillars.
Over the pandemic, Victoria has light trapped for moths in the garden. We have had over 200 different species over the year. Some of the moths have been absolutely stunning. There have been several that we haven't been able to identify as they have to be dissected.
