_*The Meadow*_

Wild flowers and a few grasses sway in the breezes…It looks almost as I envisioned it. almost…
I can claim no credit for the fullness and the variety…I planted a meadow mix and from what I can see the only thing that came up is some allysum! I also planted blue flax and it is up and soon to blossom…that will add more blue to the picture but I’m thrilled with the things that I didn’t plant…like the sheep sorel and echium vulgare, the rudbeckia and alfalfa, salsify and mustard, daisies and yarrow, towering mullein and a tiny yellow ground hugging cinqfoil and the small white “balloons” of bladder campion. A coat of many colours for a huge expanse which could have been left to boring, uniform, (when it rains) green grass.

There is a villain lurking among all the lovelies…have found bindweed twining it’s way up stems and trying deplete the soil with a root system that defies description. I’m a little worried about it getting a foothold here, but if I’m looking for the wildest of the wild…then perhaps I shouldn’t eradicate it.
In the autumn when most have gone to seed I’ll mow the whole thing down for winter.
I remember the deer enjoying the alfalfa last autumn so perhaps I’ll be selective in what I cut…leave a little patch that’s close to the forest so they don’t have to come out to a point that they would be visible from the road. ( I saw a spotted fawn today, it was near the side of the road, about a half mile from my house. )
Have had the power company remove a large light that was on the pole near the road and illuminated the whole front yard…I blamed it for attracting mating insects which engendered the grubs which ate my lawn! It’s only been gone about ten days…already I see a difference in the grass and flower beds.
At night the stars are at the treetops and the moon supplies all the light we need. It’s the first time in decades that we have experienced complete darkness…very spooky at first. Then you come to wonder what we need all that light for anyway?
Darkness is natural…and it’s not to be feared. “The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night…and I think to myself…What a wonderful world”..oh yeahhhhh.

Love your meadow planting as well as your location. You describe it so beautifully.

It looks so picturesque, I know you have quite a long tough winter but in that photo summer lasts foever!

looks amazing Lori. :-)

That's just lovely, Lori, and it will just get better year on year now. Very envious of those blue skies!

well done you, it looks lovely and i would think is virtually stressless compared to the constant upkeep of a proper large lawn given the situation.
is that lovely big tree an oak?
well done getting the power comp to remove the light, the complete darkness is magic, streetlights being non existing here too.
i wish i could get B to leave more of our weedy lawn ummown but he likes mowing and his grass 'propre', trouble is it only looks good when it has been freshly mown and then reverses to the scruffy look again very quickly, but i have managed to pusuade him to leave a small lower area uncut and grasses there are beginning to sway too!! who knows... a wild meadow with just paths cut through would be my ideal.
ps you must have been writing this blog very late last night or very early this morning if i got my time zones right??

It looks great

What a wonderful blog, good on you to get them to remove the lighting I can imagine how magical it must be with only the moon and stars to light your way.

It took me numerous tries and a great deal of frustration to upload the one picture that appears on this blog...not sure what's at play here. Will try to add the other pic I wanted to include. LOL...yes, M. I was burning a bit of the midnight oil. insomnia.
It is liberating to let go...that area could have been reseeded...but it's so dry that I couldn't see battering my head against a wall (so to speak) trying to keep something growing for which I have no use. the flowers, when they finally came, have redeemed me in the neighbour's eyes, I suppose. They thought I was being very lazy.
Thank you, my goY friends, for your positive reinforcement...Once again!
Next blog will be the stream, or the forest...can't decide which. Or maybe all the rock work...If I can just get the pics to load up!!

Really lovely Lori....a natural wood behind you and the lovely flow of natural looking meadow in front. Complete with wild flowers. A lot of thought and hard work gone into your landscape.

thanks Dorjac...the "work" has been digging the rocks out...the "thought" has been 'where do I put them, now that I've unearthed them????' lol.... decided that retaining walls will help contain the spring erosion...so that's the plan. Thank heaven the wild flowers seem to have their own plan!

Smashing blog Lori, native wildflowers = native insects, birds and mammals, how fantastic! You said you have a stream, any plans to dig a large pond/lake fed from the stream? Exciting stuff! :-)

2 Jul, 2012

Oh yes...I'd like to enlarge the meandering area at the base of the hill into a duck pond. It's just a dream...but have started grading back the banks and have established the approx. position for the dam. Was even dreaming about a water wheel!...(Give this woman a wake-up call!)
It is very exciting...but there is only me to make it a reality. Neighbour with heavy digging equipment refused to try because he said his digger would be mired to the axles...oh well...just me and my spade, we'll soldier on. Will include a bit about this in the next blog about the stream. :-)

Maybe buy a Lotto Max this week Lori?? You never know ;)

2 Jul, 2012

Lil, you are an optimist...I've never won a thing at the lotto and I've bought tickets for years now...but you know, if I did, and I won...what a GoY reunion we could have! ...and I'd have a whole pond and mill...not just the wheel! It's nice to dream though, aye? ;-0

Lol Lori, to borrow a GoY friends line, I am a pessimistic optimist!
I've been planning this GoY reunion for months now. Some even have their bags packed, just waiting on my email :) or they could just be humouring me :/
Absolutely right, nice to dream :))

Good luck, Lil. Would be lovely to say, "I know someone who won millions on Lotto Max~!"

it must be great to see such wildlife near your home Lori, i can only dream, love meadows to :o)

Agree with San! lovely Lori! I planted wildflowers this year....a metre square of them! They are just beginning to flower now...my little bit of wilderness. Will upload a photo if we ever get some sun...need sun to get the buds to open up now. You wouldn't believe how bad our weather has been this summer, it has rained almost constantly since May, and shows no signs of changing at all. Very miserable, not at all like your lovely sunshine!

10 Jul, 2012

Thanks San...I have so much area to be kept cut that I had little choice...I had to have a meadow...or... (lol)
cutting this much grass is too much for an old lady.
Thanks Karen...not sure how your meadow will go with your "garden" area. I find it hard to reconcile..I want the garden I had before on a larger scale and I don't think I have the stamina and determination left, to do it! I also am learning to love the less structured, (natural?) way of nature on an open piece of land.
Here again, wonky weather is confusing. You are floating away and we are shrivelling up...need rain. Hope this dry period isn't followed by a monsoon. I sending sunshine vibes your way :-))

13 Jul, 2012

Oh gosh, do we NEED some sunshine Lori!

13 Jul, 2012

Today the heat is so oppressive I just want to sit by a fan and read. the garden is dry as can be and things are wilting. the forecast calls for a 30% chance of rain overnight sat/sun. ONLY 30%...things are gasping, my little stream has dried up...I'd be sooo happy to send you some sunshine and heat, Karen.
