Redwings and Fieldfares

Here are some photos that show a few of them in the gardens around my home.
My lovely neighbour Stella lives in a bungalow there and these birds have taken up residence in her Ivy, that grows over a fence, and her Holly tree on the other side of her tiny garden.
During the day they perch in a Lilac tree between her and the next bungalow, and go to and fro some other deciduous trees, via my Escallonia hedge, in the open/green area infront of my house.
These two species are best friends methinks because they are always together, there have to be about twelve birds in the back there !!!

The ones with the grey heads are Fieldfares Mad, they have no red markings and they're quite large birds.
The Redwings have a white stripe over their eye and the red alongside their wing.

~ we had a mixed flock today and the Redwing is the one with the speckled breast and orange /red at the sides of the breast under the wing~we had this enormous Mistle Thrush and they certainly like apples/grapes and dried fruit!

What pretty little birds.....we get fieldfares up here...but not in my garden unfortunately......

I've only seen one fieldfare, and not in my garden. I wish they'd come - it must be lovely to have the winter birds.
Mind you, they must be regretting leaving whereever they came from - don't they migrate here from so called 'colder' countries?

Thank you Louise. I haven't seen a Fieldfare before. You are lucky to have them and the Redwings, we don't have either.

~ I did read they may come down from Scotland if it gets colder up there?` and yes spent all day watching them!

Aha ! They're hoping for a few degrees warmer down here then.
Not by many though :-/

We normally get both but not seen any redwings yet this winter and just the solitary fieldfare in the garden.

`~ no!~ still quite cold Louise~ I have been tipping the water out of bowls for the birds and putting out fresh~ it is solid lumps of ice and it hasn't thawed all day~

~some years ago when we were in the northeast a large flock of waxwings arrived on our estate which had a Rowan tree at the end of each drive~ they sat there in groups until all the berries were gone and them moved on!~ still remember that~

Wow Arlene..what a sight that must have been ! Must plant a Rowan !! Lol

a similar thing happened about 15 yrs ago too. i lived in a street called rowan ave, and all the berries got stripped just as you say. I did manage to get a photo that time.

~ I though I had pushy starlings but there is a very large Fieldfare in the garden this morning giving the starlings a very hard time~he is much too big to argue with! How long will they usually stay anyone?
10 Jan, 2010
They are big birds aren't they !!!
I was wondering the same thing Arlene ..... all reference books say they're here 'til April but i wonder if they 'move about' whilst they're here .... moving to different regions etc?

These Fieldfare birds are beautiful, we too have them in our garden and they love to eat apples. they do fight each other they seem very territorial, but suppose this cold weather they are protecting their food source!
your pictures are really good.

So sorry I missed this blog, especialy as I also did a blog on these birds.
What a great time we had when the snow arrived and the Fieldfares and Redwings visited our gardens regularly.
Well done Louise, happy memories.

Louise, what lovely photos. Two species? I must be a bit thick but I can only see 1 kind of bird. Are they Redwings? They are certainly very lovely birds.
Are they male and female Redwings?
I wait with bated breath to find out.
