A nest disaster !

Poor pigeons they try every year to raise a family but they seem doomed to failure. They have been really busy nest building in the Leylandi tree in my front garden usually the Magpies always suss them out and they lose their eggs or babies, but this time their nest has fallen out!.I picked it up and it is really clever how it is made with mud grass and twigs I left it near the tree.A bit later on I noticed the pigeon down on the ground having a look at it he had some more bits of twigs with him,he pottered about for a bit then flew off no doubt he will be back to try again they always do.

Collared doves usually try to build an early springtime nest in my pergola with the evergreen clematis... but after lots of activity, they usually give up and start all over again in a bigger tree in another garden. There are lots of Collared Doves around, so they must eventually raise some babies successfully.
All the best for your pigeons. :o)

Perhaps the pigeons will move to another estate, I like to see them but they are so greedy and can be a bit destructive, also clumsy as Spritz has stated in her blogs, Lol.....

I've heard magpies are nasty. I didn't realise they'd do that though

It is another nature thing Hywel they are a lovely bird and their colours are really bonny but they do raid nests,I think they also eat road kill.I have a pair in my garden and they are good parents they raise at least one chick every year, but they can be nasty.

Some birds are really daft. I had a robin build his nest three feet off the ground one year. The next year he put it in the garage (shows how waterproof that was hah hah) and when the summer rains came it all funnelled into the nest!
I have wondered about buying a dove cote and just putting it in so that some birds could colonise it.

He has not been back today but the collared dove and the blackbird have been very busy nest building. I have had to chase the magpie just once today there is nothing in the nest yet but the blackbird was not happy.

Aw that's a shame Mavis........poor old Pigeon....:o( Lets hope he finds somewhere a bit safer...that Magpie sounds to be a bit of a pest.....survival of the fittest I suppose..............

Hi Janey he has moved to the Leylandi in the back garden,he should be safer there, but I will keep an eye out for the Magpie as you say it is survival of the fittest.
