Wondering if any of you have read Tamsin Westhorpe’s Diary of a Modern country Gardener. She was a former editor of The English Garden. The diary is a personal hands-on monthly account of Stockton Bury, the 4 acre Herefordshire garden which has been in her family for 100 years. It’s quite a humourus book with plenty of ‘what to do and when. This book deserves space on any gardener’s bedside table.

Sounds good Julia. I’ve been given Beth Chatto’s Garden Notebook ... also a month by month account. Looking forward to dipping in!

One for me to look out for. Thanks for suggesting. It would be interesting to know different people's favourite gardening bedside reads. (rather than merely 'how-to's') My favourites are old books: Mirabel Osler 'A Gentle Plea for Chaos' and 'The Morville Hours' by Katherine Swift.

Good idea Ange. I enjoy going to bed with Christopher Lloyd! Ha ha (his Garden Diaries of Great Dixter are a humorous read as well as useful 🙂.)

Well I don't read in bed but can recommend The Plant Hunters by Musgrave, Gardner and Musgrave - or any other book about plant collectors! They were very adventurous men, sometimes with tragic ends to all their work when they lost their entire collection in shipwrecks! It makes you really appreciate some of your plants that were so hard won.

Sounds fantastic, one of those books that is hard to put down, I have a similar book but the other end of the scale, yes it’s one of those old books, called Mr Middletons gardening, it’s so interesting how gardening was done back in the day.

It definitely sounds like it’s a worthy read, Julia. I’ll have to have a look for this one. It’s also a very pretty bedside table addition.
