The first photo is my son’s Clematis Tiaga….the second is mine fed each week with Tomerite showing only a handful of blooms..my son’s grows under a tree in shade and is covered with flower heads…it is never fed or attended to.Just goes to show sometimes less is more.
Interestingly, Thorncroft nurseries say that after planting a Clematis the first year is roots,2nd year, shoots and 3rd year flowers. Perhaps next year my Taiga will surprise me!

Also some plant foods only go to promote growth not flowers. High potash feeds are usual for flowers. Tomato food fits that so try dilute tom feed.

A fascinating comparison, many thanks for giving us something to think about.
Hope yours will continue to grow and thrive.

Thanks Julia! I have just bought another clematis, very tall for the new arch I have just built and wanted to fill it quickly, so now I think I too will have to wait for flowers!

I was quietly sitting in the shade this morning having some breakfast when I noticed my c.viticella plena elegance which I planted 3 years ago in the hope it would climb through a not much loved straight up vertical cherry tree. It was doing it's thing after all this time! And I had totally ignored it this year after 2 years of tlc when it just sulked, so I thought! I had been down with a nasty stomach bug so this week so had not been in the garden at all. What a lovely surprise. So don't worry Kate, it'll happen. I might put some pictures on later. Btw a healthy dose of tomato feed tonight, she's earned it..
