Having watched Goldfinches in the trees at the front of the house thought I would tempt them into the back garden with some Niger Seeds.

Have waited, very patiently – I might add, for months – nothing. Then……… along came TWO YIPEEEEEEEE. Would have been good had I been able to see them :o(( Not my best photographic moment, but you get my drip…. I mean drift :o)))

I tried niger seed..for months and months ..non ever came .:(

I tried it too, with little interest. They seemed happier sitting on top of the Achillea eating the seeds and I'm quite pleased about that because niger seed is so expensive.

Oddly interesting pics, those, especially the last one.
I'm lucky to have several goldfinches coming every day and really enjoy watching them. They do, however, go through an awful lot of niger seed, especially just now. Then there gets to be a build-up of seed under the feeders and that's the bit I don't like - the clearing up after them!
I can understand your delight in seeing your first ones. I had a Great Spotted woodpecker last week for first time ever, on the fat balls, and got all excited, but he/she hasn't come back again, sadly.

your weather looked horrendous,N3..you were lucky to get anything at all through the window.! we haven't seen any here, but some neighbours get them.I keep thinking about getting some Niger seeds, but as Ginellie says, they are so expensive.Glad your patience paid off though :o)

oh what a shame and how frustrating ~ why cant the rain only come at night?

so glad you got the goldfinches, i dont have them but i wish i did.

Cheers Pixi :o) The seeds are expensive Ginellie hence only the bottom of the feeder has the niger seeds in :o)
I don't have a problem with the seeds beneath Objiib as there are two magpies and four Jackdaws that act like a vac for anything seed like on the floor below - Even Tyler (the dog) has a go and then regrets it as he chomps away the rest of the day trying to get the seeds out of his teeth - funny to watch bless!! I would love to see any Woodpecker in the wild, never seen one. Goldfinches are cool Paul, I think they look like clowns of the bird world. It was awful for a few days, with non stop rain Bloomer and yes Sticki I wish it would just rain at night. But I was determined to get some sort of shot of them :o))))

We have a special nyjer seed feeder with very tiny holes.
The goldfinches and tits can get them but the bigger birds can't and I haven't noticed any seed on the ground underneath. The seed is much too expensive to feed magpies and jackdaws though!
We also have a bit of a problem with starlings on the ordinary seed and peanuts, as there is a winter roost estimated to be of about 1,000, 000 birds only a mile away and we get our share here. But it is wonderful to see them fly in at dusk, like great clouds of smoke streaming across the sky.
We have a pair of greater spotted woodpeckers and had to laugh at them this week - because of all the rain the moss, dust etc on the tree trunks has rubbed off onto their fronts and instead of being smart and white it is a sad beige colour. They don't seem to use the bird bath at all. We are looking forward to them getting their nice spring plumage!
Better luck with your photos another time nt3yy, when it isn't raining!

I'm pleased you saw the goldfinches eventually :o) They didn't seem to mind the rain...

Thanks Hywel. Maybe they decided to turn up in the rain so I couldn't see them properly Little monkeys :o))))

Agree with Ojibway93 ... oddly interesting pics.

Great to know the Goldfinches are visiting :o)

Hope so sheila, spent a few minutes running round trying to find the camera, tripping over the dog, so wasn't risking opening the door and them flying away :o)))))) Cheers Amy lol :o)
I know what you mean about the magpies and jackdaws Stera, but they will go after anything. There was even a standoff between Cyril and a Magpie over a peanut the other day, but didn't get the camera in time!!! The Starlings drive me mad, they are like locusts, I spend so much time running out of the kitchen so they fly away, don't need to go to the gym :o) We have a roost a couple of miles away, under the North Pier, it is spectacular to watch and I intend to get some good pics soon. I am so jealous of all of you who have seen woodpeckers !

N3, I think you did really well with these pic's with regards to the rain and photographing them from indoors. We've got a bird bath just outside our patio windows and get to see some interesting sights! But as for taking photographs... the birds just fly off at any sign of movement inside. Shame eh?
