Chilly days and Dark Skies

….how sad my garden looks.
It feels neglected and miserable.
Bit like me really, although my health is steadily improving I have been frustrated by my lack of energy and enthusiasm for the things I love.
Its my first week back at work and so this morning I kicked off my day with a tradition that I grew to love last year. I quick walk around my garden to see what was happening.
I have tiny shoots in my pots where I planted bulbs at the end of last year…my water iris has gone crazy with spiky dark green leaves poking its way through the pond cover. Robins where having a morning wash in the birdbath I chose last summer…and the weeds ? Well they seem to be thriving nicely in my previously neat and tidy beds ! :)
So I got to thinking, whilst tucking in some wayward fronds on my adored passion fruit plant, if the garden can thrive in the cold and the dark, that it can find a way to push on regardless, then so can I.
I have a word with myself and I have made a resolve to stop sulking, get a grip and be grateful for all the chances I have too…my health will improve, I will make sure of that !
Roll on the spring, and the sun and the all the work ahead to make my garden better than ever.
Its lovely to smile again !

that's the attitude to take. remember 'that which does not kill you makes you stronger'.
the signs of growth always makes me smile. I can see snowdrops pushing through from my conservatory :o)

More power to your elbow NAT. Its been a good winter for weeds - you are not alone there! Think positive - joy is waiting for you just round the corner...

You are being very positive. That's good !
It's nice that you have bulbs coming up, and maybe other things coming into flower as the days get longer too. They will help lift your spirits.
As for energy levels, we can't keep going without a rest. That's what night time and winter are for. Keep resting and conserving your energy so that you can enjoy the spring and summer when they come :)

It is always very tiring to be ill, and then it is tiring to get better. I have no good advice, except to wish you well and keep your thoughts on good health, and a good mind.

Your garden is indeed thriving - and a good long sleep is vital to health & vigor and all those flowers we get in the Spring, your story is inspiring.

You have been feeling the way Robert Frost describes in his poem "Lodged !!
Remember the only way when one feels down is UP and plants know that. Spring is just around the corner.

The rain to the wind said,
'You push and I'll pelt.'
They so smote the garden bed
That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged--though not dead.
I know how the flowers felt.
Love this poem Eirlys

Nat, good to see your positive attitude! The dark days of Winter will be gone soon, signs of Spring are just appearing which are so welcoming and heart-warming!

Nat you're now back on the upwards track, first week back, good for you, hope it goes well for you, just don't do too much, many of us have been sidetracked through health issues over the years, always seems worse if it coincides with winter and dark nights, it often seems a tad on the bleak side at the beginning of the year, dull, dark days don't help, so different if we have a day of sunshine, the chance for a wander around, that's when the signs of stirring are noticed, bulbs popping up, new growth on the faithful perennials, winter flowers beginning to open, you'll be surprised how happy your garden will be in a couple of months, I worried about mine when I was unable to care for it, the garden didn't care it carried on in its own way, actually Nat its suffering this year with having to cope with a little westie, so I bet mine is worse than your, lol........Come warmer and dryer weather and I'll sort it.....

Enjoy the rest and build yourself up for some warm sunny days in the garden.

Thank you x

Glad to hear you're feeling better, as Linda says use these wintry days to build yourself up gradually so that when the warmer days of spring arrive you'll be ready & able to sort the garden out.
