when i was fourteen, fifteen, even sixteen, i would lie in bed at night and dream my favorite dream. in my imagination, i built a small, cozy house on wheels, in which i planned to drive away someday to find i’m not sure what… i spent intense thought on creating every detail…delighting in placing every shingle, every nail; carefully planning every nook and cranny, every windowpane and potted plant. my dream house grew with the addition of porches, and windowboxes, and even a stable until it collapsed on itself with improbability and the weight of my heavy eyelids. the next night i would begin again. several years later, i came across a lovely small book full of photos of people much braver and more daring than i, who actually had similar dreams and turned their “rolling homes” into reality…beautiful handbuilt creations on the backs of pickup trucks, old flatbed diesels and school buses with their tops cut off. as time passed, i came to understand that i’m not really a traveler by nature and like the plants in my garden i put down deep roots and there i stay. it was the building of my house i loved after all and i found that i am happiest always in my own garden with a cat or so for company. somehow, about four years ago my little house, without the wheels, came to be in the middle of the garden. so, my dream has come full circle and i am content.
