Worked hard in the garden in last fortnight - it has paid off

Thought I would let you all know what I have been up to the last few weeks in the garden. It has been so so dry, but last Tuesday we had the most rain we have had in weeks and weeks and it has done good, pleased I got my new shrubs in before it rained.

Abelia planted last week-

Newly cleared pond area, it looks so much tidier now I have chopped plants back and weeded things out

Now as if that wasn’t enough to keep a body happy and exercised well, my daughter’s dog arrived to keep me even more busy than I had been:

Please meet RALF – he is a chocolate Labrador who is on a strict diet, if you know the breed you know they eat and eat and eat, and he did! He is now on a strict diet, because of joint problems, doesn’t seem to be losing weight but time will tell. He thinks his throat has been cut, greedy or what. His mistress and master are off sunning themselves on a well earned holiday in the Dominican Republic – I am not jealous NO I AM NOT!!

Even Scruff is getting his fitness back at almost 13 years, he came for a walk with us this morning and that is the first time I have managed to persuade him to leave the garden in months.

Back to the gardening, when the dogs are asleep or supposed to be resting:

I have dug out some more of the green stuff (well it is back to green after the rain) and planted some new plants in there.

and last but not least of course I have been out spending some money (the pension fund was hit hard yet again)

He is the quiet kind, except when the wind blows and then he tinkles – hope you enjoy meeting and greeting and viewing the latest editions to the household at Whiteswood Cottage.

a lovely blog Oliveoil ...your garden looks beautiful...the dogs are cute & love your wind chime too...

The first one I bought was a beautiful round one with various coloured butterflies in it, there was an owl one and I had trouble choosing, chose the butterflies and went back for the owl one last week, it had gone, so had the cockerel instead. lol. wasn't wasting my journey now was I, that would have been silly now wouldn't it?

wonderful wind chime! Cock a doodle doesn't!!

5 Aug, 2010

No he doesn't but he is by the back door and even if the wind doesn't blow I can tinkle each time I pass him.

5 Aug, 2010

I cannot resist, neither can my youngest, each time we see a display in the GC or shops we have to just give them a tinkle - nothing but big kids lol.

Lovely pics Mum! Love the one of both dogs...scruff is so cute and you can see he is a real character! Molly really has a particular loathing of all westies....she just cannot stand the sight of any of them!!

5 Aug, 2010

Molly oh molly - scruff would not like her not liking him - he is very fussy especially with other dogs, he loves ralf, has a love hate relationship with Paul's three spaniels and thinks everyone and anyone loves him!

6 Aug, 2010

Molly is a total bully to other small dogs. She will also take on any very large dogs that threaten her......(bloomin fantasist!)....but she remembers every dog that has ever jumped her and goes mental when they come near her! She one was hassled by a Westie, but now she hates all westies. She's usually ok with other Jackies, but Yorkies she considers fair prey. Sometimes, with really big dogs, she goes all submissive and lets them sniff her, then starts really screaming blue murder....so the owners think shes been bitten.....what an actress!! It's so embarrassing. I keep her on a lead almost all the time these days!

thanks Anchorman so pleased you like it, I spend hours pottering in it and love watching the birds coming and going, dragonflies just now flying all around, you can actually see them catching the midges as they fly by. Have been reading your blogs and catching up with all your projects they are great, keep up the good work. Great gardens

I bet your garden is a haven for wildlife,in particular bees, butterflies and other insect. My own garden has a similar cottage garden feel. I'm not too keen on formality I like an organised chaos in the garden where plants are allowed to do their own thing and are only brought under control once a year with a good hard prune!

31 Aug, 2010

Great minds think alike (or so they say) don't know about mine being a great mind, but I love the chaos - sometimes I just have to have a bit of organisation as you say about this time of year, it gets a good going through. Only trouble then is that you have gaps that you just have to fill and off I trip to the nearest garden centre or the one that has the yummiest food also and spend spend spend. Oh life is so tedious lol - just gardening and planting and weeding and pruning, what on earth did I find to do in years gone by. LOL only kidding I love my garden I would be totally lost without it.

Thank you for your lovely comments Linsuffolk, I do enjoy my garden pleased you enjoyed the blog. How is your weather in suffolk, my youngest and I had a camping holiday in Suffolk about 8 years ago, in fact that was the last holiday I had, if you can call camping with a teenager holiday. We had weather to die for, sunshine everyday in fact it reached 35 degrees one day, we had no breeze and it was far far too hot for us. But we had a great holiday and have some fantastic memories. Thanks again for your comments. Barbara (Oliveoil)

Hi Barbara, glad you enjoyed your hols in Suffolk . Where abouts did you camp? I was a lovely year that year, I can remember how hot it was, too hot to do anything wasn't it? Last year was absolute rubbish weather, and the year before that wasn't much better. This year we haven't done too bad, but not really what our summers used to be and should be like. We have had a lot of chilly winds here too this year and although the sun has been out, it dosen't feel that warm because of the wind, but never mind we cant have everything can we? What do you think of the new look of GOY?

Hi Lin, cannot say I 'like' but only really affected by the colours of the new site, it is far far too glary for me. Otherwise it is ok, but I spent quite a long while making myself wander around it last night to get used to it. Think if they could alter the page colours I would have no problems.
To be honest cannot recall the name of the camp site, apart from we had big lakes, and there were Bee Orchids on the site. We travelled away from the site and visited lots of places around, we went mainly to see thatched cottages, lol. we love chocolate box pictures and gardens of cottages in that area, we had a brilliant time, we visited a pottery and bought hand made teapots, they were amazing. Loved the place. Walks were stunning, only thing wrong with it was the little rivers had all dried up because of the drought. Hope they are back to flowing as they should be.

Hi Barbara, I've been working my brain (LOL) hard thinking about lakes and I can only think of one that sticks in my mind. Does Fritton Lakes ring a bell? there is a little village nearby with Thatched roof cottages called Somerleyton and I think there is a pottery in Lowestoft, thats if it is still there. The thatched cottages are all situated around the village oes this help you to remember where it was?

15 Oct, 2010

Bit of a boob there Barbara, it was meant to read the thatched cottages were situated around the village green.Does this help.............

15 Oct, 2010

Will have to get my campsite book out that didn't ring a bell with me Lin, youngest might remember when she comes home on Sunday, she gadding about with boyfriend this weekend with her sister and brother in law. Just checked what the name of the pottery was, it was Tony Carters, Debenham, you wouldn't believe what my tea pot is of, it is a garden table with pots and cakes on the lid, daughter's t.pot is in the shape of a Harrods Carrier bag. lol. she said it would be the only time she owned a Harrods bag. lol. Amazing place, don't know if it is still there.

15 Oct, 2010

It is still there Barbara. but Mr Fayed has now sold it to a Sheik, so I read in the newspaper. On his first day there he turned up there with relatives in about 3 huge rolls royces and parked them all on the double yellow lines outside the store.. He said he thought he was allowed because he'd bought the store. I think I've got that right if not it was very near it......

15 Oct, 2010

I meant the pottery lin lol :o)))
