As Autumn approaches - there's still lots of colour in the garden.

Just been out and about and thought I would post the latest pictures which I took on a beautiful sunny September morning. Just hope we can keep some sunshine into October and November. It will help pass the dreary winter months along.

Solidago I think this is it’s name (I know it as Golden Rod) old fashioned but very colourful at this time of year.

This Hibiscus was bought as a little twig from Focus about 5 years back it has been moved three times, this is definitely the place for her, she is doing so well now.

The bargain buy of Heleniums oranges, reds and yellows and they have all flowered, great buy filled in a gap and masses of colour, hope they survive the winter (should do) look forward to seeing them again next summer.

My new buy, think it was supposed to be a decoration for indoors, but couldn’t resist it for the end of the chicken shed, now it has got two clematis to climb up the side of it (hopefully) I say hopefully because I moved one of them from another place which it did not like. Fingers crossed eh!

This one bought on e.bay when I joined GOY I saw a picture of this plant and had to have it. It has grown into a beauty, just love the colours in this and the berries are a big bonus for the birds.

Russian Vine with a self-set wild rose – thought I would let the rose have its’ way because of the colours of the hips in the Autumn, this is the first year it has been trained over this old arch and it is paying me back for looking after it, the hips are amazing, it will thicken up and have lots more if I can keep on tieing it in and trimming it down to keep it under control. Hopefully the vine will not overcome it, will have to chop it back somewhat me thinks.

Rose that Karen Sue bought me a few years back – lost its label but think it might be Young Licidas any suggestions please.

Another freebie, think the birds dropped a seed many years ago, am inclined to think it might be a maple of some kind, but no idea what it is. Can anyone identify it for me please. Will put a picture on the questions page with some more leaf detail, maybe someone will come up with a name for me.

Quiet corner tidied up for winter, love to sit here in Summer because it is in the shade best here after tea as the sun comes over the cottage and is blinding in the early evening.

Bulbs planted in the pots by the back door path – so that I can see them without getting my boots out. Hopefully we shall not have as bad a winter as we had last year or I shall not be able to see the pots let alone the bulb flowers.

This one taken from the slabbed patio area, sounds posh but isn’t just a few slabs laid down to give us a firm area to sit without the chair legs disappearing into the ground.

Hope you liked your little tour (LITTLE? I hear you say) sigh! I can talk for England when I get going on about my little bit of paradise. Hope you are all getting this lovely sunshine, will put some more pictures on my home page.
Bye for now. Happy Gardening.

Lovely, Olive - I enjoyed it! Now we know where Karen gets her love of gardening....It's sunny today after rain in the night, by the way. :-))

Thanks Spritzhenry, but I am not sure that Karen gets it from me think we bounce of one another really, she has set me off with roses and clematis, and I am even trying to grow clems through shrubs now, all I know is that we both love our plants and gardens. It is a keep me fit trip also, because I don't particularly like exercise and walking is not really safe around where we live, too much traffic and no paths. Have a nice walk in the wood some times with the dog, but even he has taken to just being lazy now he is nearly 13. How is Henry doing? Hope he is doing ok. Rain at night would be good, we have only really had one wet day in weeks, but being clay the garden it is holding out well now.

Lovely garden, Olive...you have worked very hard and it's so nice to see the colour now that we are heading into autumn.

I like your butterfly very much (I'm into butterflies...lol). Was it a local find? I'm on the lookout for unusual things to put in our as yet, undeveloped small garden and have seen a few ideas here on GOY in the ornament department...very tempting!

I'll enjoy reading your blog, Olive.

Really lovely pics Olive, I've just done the same as you but no where near as much colour in mine :-))))))

9 Sep, 2010

I bought the butterfly from 'The Range' don't know if you have them in your area, think it should be on the living room wall really, but I thought if it lost it's colour I could re-enamel it, I am not one for wall art in the house, but love it where it is situated, it brightens up the shed panel lovely. Pleased you like the garden blog, hope you find an ornament you like.

Thanks Annella, pleased to be able to get out still in the garden, it has turned quite cool of an evening, but sunny during the day, so no complaints from me. Pleased you enjoyed the photos.

I'm pleased to say I've discovered there is a shop not too far away from us. I will have to have a look on their website and make a trip out there soon.

I may wait until my good friend returns from vacation as she's a keen gardener and we can make an afternoon of it. Thanks for the tip, Olive.

It wasn't expensive, well compared with some garden ornaments you find these days. Think it was under £20 so I thought that was a good bargain. Happy bargain hunting.

9 Sep, 2010

Yep, I'll have to visit the actual store as I can't find anything like that in their online shop.

I love bargain hunting so I'll enjoy it :)

Lovely garden Olive, excuse my naivety, but is that a cape fuschia in pic 6 ?

9 Sep, 2010

I don't know if it is called a cape fuschia or not I know it as Himalayan Honeysuckle not its proper name but eh oh! Now I am going to show off its proper name is Leycesteria Formosa not really showing off I copied it and pasted it. lol. not good with Latin or any other language really. Just about manage English. lol. seem to think I have heard it called cape fuschia though, google it and see if it comes up with the same sort of pictures. Glad you like the garden.

Very pretty garden, you have worked hard and it shows. I would love to be able to walk round my garden but it is a bit on the small side. i do my best with what I have and have been rewarded with a lot of colour this year. I still have some pots with annuals still showing some colour which I didn't expect to find on my return from 2 weeks holiday, so I am pleased about that.

Absolutely beautiful Oliveoil....so much going on in your garden, mine is dominated by the Rudbekias at the moment naught else much apart from the odd roses....

9 Sep, 2010

Ah but it is still so beautiful, and I love your rose arches and your new arches, they have made me make a decision about making a different fence along my main footpath - next year springtime I think. If it happened to stay nice might have a go this back end. Will keep you posted, I must have more climbing roses, it is a definite, it is going to happen, I will spend some more money, I cannot live without them any longer. I don't buy clothes or handbags or shoes well not unless I am desperate, so roses it must be!! LOL but keep it to yourself! :>) No chinese whispers or else!!

Love the first photograph Mum and you're right, there is loads of colour still going on there. that berry looks like hawthorn to me......Love the butterfly!

9 Sep, 2010

The butterfly is a beauty isn't he! The berry is of a Whitebeam tree, the people on here are so knowledgeable. I asked on the questions page and got a reply more or less straight away, amazing what you learn on here.

Thank you Cristina pleased you like it. Go get those bulbs now and get planting, it was good to get there before they had been picked over. Just ordered some Hellebores for the three big tubs, bought some last year and had them in the same tubs but put them into a new border I dug up last year. Good excuse to buy some more. lol. :>)

And get looking for the Karen pics too, come on Barbara :-))))))))))

14 Sep, 2010

Sorry Annella just cannot find the one with THE dress, don't know at this moment where it is. Will keep looking.

Hi there Shirley tulip, thank you for your comments - haven't grown allium bulbs myself, might go and buy some and try them - they are the ones with the big head? Wonder if they might be too tall for my borders, might try and see what I can find. thanks again.

16 Sep, 2010

Alliums can be anything from 5cm to 150 cm so plenty of choice .. I've never had them before .. mine are Caeruleum, Moly, Roseum, Purple Sensation, Ostrowskianum and Sphaerocephalon .. my goodness they don't make names that roll off the tongue easily ! Colours should be blue, yellow, rose-pink, and pinkish-purple and I'll pot them rather than place in the soil.

16 Sep, 2010

thanks Shirley tulip will have a look next time I go to GC
