Does the Camera Lie?

I decided yesterday to do some tidying up in the middle big border, it was looking decidedly lacking in colour and lots of dead seed heads. Finished it off this morning, quite disappointed in how many gaps had been left after the tidy up. Mainly because last year I thought that I had filled all the gaps and solved the bare patch problem.
I had a rabbit problem early on in the springtime, when two little rabbits found a way through into my garden. The horrible bunnies ate off the new shoots and my new roses (which cost a fortune) and put paid to my efforts to fill in gaps. Hopefully the roses will recover but not really holding out much hope as the ground has been too dry for them to get going properly.
Nevertheless the garden grew and produced quite a good display through the summer. But now after doing the clearout it looks quite bare in places. I am trying to make up my mind what to use to fill the gaps in with, think it may be bushes and shrubs as the rabbits left those alone.
While I was deciding what to do I thought I would take out my camera and low and behold when looking at the photographs I now see that the garden is not as bare as I thought. Why or how is that? The colour is still there when I look at the pictures but when I walk around I am disappointed. Hence why the title of this blog.
I hope you like the pictures, I am still going to fill in the gaps because I know that they are there, even if the CAMERA DOES LIE.

Your garden looks magnificent and full to me Olive Oil. A few little gaps are good for air circulation to keep your plants healthy. Your camera may lie to me as well.

Now Olive, a lesson in gardening, those gaps are called stepping stones, you put them there so you could stroll around your lovely garden and not have patches in the grass pathway, lol... It all looks smashing, actually very full, I know you have been lacking the rain but it really doesn`t show in your photo`s.
Have you ever tried growing your own rose cuttings, it doesn`t always work but if you have a favourite it might be worth giving it a go.
Lovely photo`s, I always like a stroll around your garden....

Your garden looks really beautiful Olive. Don't know what you are worrying about. Feel proud of all the lovely colour there. I see no gaps.

Hi Olive. You have a lovely garden and deserve help. Get a tin of 'Reynardin' from your Garden Centre. About £8, but cheaper pro rata if you can get a gallon can (Central Wool Growers, Stamford). Carefully tip some on an old towel (it smells awful if you get it on your hands) and place this under your hut, or somewhere where it cant be leached by the rain. Renew every 3 weeks. A local allotment steward here calls it 'Fox's piddle.'
Exit rabbits.

My conclusion then is that THE CAMERA DOES LIE, thank you all for looking, yes I agree it does look lovely, but I know where the gaps are.
Thank you Diane for your input on the rabbit deterrent, sounds a plan to me. Will pass the message on to Simbad she also has rabbit problems and lives just down the road from me.
Thank you: Mariek,Steragram,Cinderella,Ginellie,Lincslass,Costas and Michaella,
you are so kind, your comments are appreciated.
What I can say also is that because the bunnies ate off the tops of the plants they are still to flower, hopefully -suppose it was a bit like the Chelsea chop but a little early. I am going to try out this technique next year, got cold feet about doing it this year, but after the rabbits did it for me (even though they were a bit too harsh) I am going to give it a go.
Hope you all have fun in your gardens - I am sure you will weather permitting. Off to get ready for cricket now, last two matches this weekend for this year. Bye for now. Barbara (Oliveoil)

What a lovely garden, looks just the place for relaxing and a lovely wander round.

Beautiful garden Barbara, mine has lots of gaps now, but must say yours I can't see.
Must be nearing the end of the cricket season now, since Rob packed it in I loose track, he's had to stop his squash now too, knees and back are really bad, but he can dig so he's really been sorting his allotment out, thank goodness there's some sort of excercise he can do, he's always been so active and not the sort to sit still for long.
Thanks for the rabbit deterrent tip Diane, having a big rabbit problem myself I'll be trying that out :-)

sent you a pm Simbad didn't know if you would read this blog so sent you one special. Good to you aren't I? lol. Last matches today and tomorrow. Hoping it stays fine to get it finished, partying in pub tonight, got a karaoke booked, the skiffle night did not go down well with the youngsters and Martin refuses to do it anymore. So we had to think of something for them to do to celebrate and say goodbye to the season. lol. I am NOT singing I hasten to add. Thank you for your lovely comment.
Hi Sticki, glad you like it pleased you had a look and a wander around. thanks for looking.

Your garden is beautiful Barbara even if the camera does lie. I know exactly what you mean about those gaps, they get bigger the closer you get to them! Fabulous ladybid pics :o))

What bare patches Olive, your garden (and I know I've said it before) is absolutely beautiful. If you were to enter it in a garden competition, you would win first prize.

Well, it has all been said before me, Barbara ... you really do have a wonderful garden ... gaps or no gaps ... love all the pics ... :o)))

You have the garden I aspire to have.... one day! If you think you have gaps in your garden you would be pulling your hair out at all the huge spaces in mine..... I call it my work in progress, haha.

what a great space you have created there....its so full of lovelyness....:-)

Thank you so much everyone, so pleased you like the garden. I can still see the gaps as Lily2 said, you walk around and get closer and can see the space that is awaiting the shoehorn. Not sorting out any more plants though will wait now until I have ordered my roses and made a decision as to what to put in the spaces. I am putting a list on the side of my computer if any of you have any ideas, I am going along with the thought of shrubs, probably everygreen (to give me something to look at during the winter months) but not got any ideas yet, nothing which grows too tall unless it doesn't mind being chopped back. about 2 - 21/2ft tall I am thinking of so all ideas gratefully considered. Thank you everyone for your input so far, it is appreciated.
ps Welcome petal50 good to meet you happy gardening. Somewhere on here are some before pictures which will show you how much has happened since I started with my blank canvas. Little by little you will create your special place. Good luck.

garden looks ab fab, gaps what gaps xx

I have said it all before Cazcat it does lie obviously. I know you cannot see them from the photographs but you see I know where they are!!! lol. Even I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at the pictures. It is amazing how you can take photographs at different angles and miss out all the bad bits. lol. Believe me they are there just not visible on these shots.

Heavens, what a glorious garden! You've taken some beautiful pictures and I too love the ladybirds. Wish I could take some half decent photos of my garden, as I seem to have the opposite problem. When I look at it, I feel it's putting on a pretty good show, weather and time of year considered, but the camera says otherwise and I am left feeling a little downhearted. I don't know whether to blame my camera or - and far more likely as one with a history of photographic decapitation - my basic ineptitude. Anyway, it's lovely to enjoy other people's skills and thus, their gardens. Thanks for sharing with everyone.

You are very welcome Tuesdaybear, keep practising with that camera it takes time to get into it all. I take the shots on mine as close as I can and then just crop them and they come up closer still. Sounds tecky but isn't or I should not be able to do it. lol. Thank you for looking glad you like the garden.
