A Year in the Life of my Cottage Garden

As it is now turning cold and work time is down to a minimum in the garden, I thought it would be a good idea to post some pictures of the difference each season brings to the garden:-

First three pictures taken at the beginning of 2012 when we had suffered some really heavy snowstorms, then soon after the snow had melted the snowdrops began to come out giving us hope that we would soon be bathed in lots of lovely sunshine. (Little did we know what we were in for):

Very snowy garden – hoping we do not get this amount of snow this winter!

After the snow has gone!

Things are now beginning to change, although the borders are very bare at this time of the year. Beautiful weather and hopes are high for a lovely summer!!!!

This picture taken at the beginning of March, lovely time of the year for me, before it gets too hot (usually – sadly not this year)

These taken at the end of March, already the borders are changing quickly.

The next one is taken at the beginning of May:

End of May – I am always amazed by how things fill in and plants grow and cover up the gaps in the borders.

Beginning of July when we have had a terrific amount of rain and we were all hoping that was going to be the end of it all. (fat chance of that I hear you all say) lol. ah well at least we saw the hosepipe ban off. lol

I have never seen as much rain as we had this last summer but the biggest bonus for me was not having to drag out the hosepipe and water. The garden really benefitted from the downpours.

This taken in the third week of August when usually things are baked to a crisp and the watering is beginning to be a drudge.

Third week in September and things are still very damp and still very very colourful.

1st week in October – we have had little sunshine and the garden somehow has managed to produce a brilliant display, things have grown well and are holding out well. Which all goes to show that plants and trees all have a way of dealing with the weather, whatever it is like.

Autumn is now upon us and the garden is producing some fantastic colours, it really is a wonderful colour pallete – I do love the trees as they all change colour. This year seems to have been a good one for autumnal colours. Not looking forward to sweeping all those leaves up though – ah well good for the leaf mould. lol.

Hope you are all able to enjoy something out of the garden at this time as we enter the Winter phase of our gardening season. I hope you are all getting some sunshine in your lives and are able to appreciate and still hope for better things to happen next year. (Do not sit with your fingers or toes crossed too long though LOL :o) Keep warm.

Wow Olive, your garden is lovely. So much colour. I love all the trees at the bottom. Are they yours? It looks very secluded when they've got their leaves. Love it.

Your garden is a treat to admire Olive no matter what time of the year it is, those trees make a smashing backdrop and I do agree the colours this year are outstanding, I remember when we were having a moan about our lack of flowers early summer??, lol but gosh our flowers now have definitely made up for it.
Lovely photo`s Olive, even the one with the natural pond and stepping stones in July looks good....

Lovely blog Mum and really shows off 'my' favourite time of year.....early May....beautifully. Just love all that freshness and 'hope'. Disappointing this year wasn't it, but then again, as you said, at least no water shortages now!

What is it about daffodils? :-)
As soon as I got to those I couldn't help but smile. They usually mean that the worst of the winter weather is over and we have warm sunny days ahead. I love to see them.

Your garden looks lovely all through the year.

I just loved this blog , Barbara. What a great idea, doing this. I can see that your garden looks lovely the whole year round! Didn't like the snow though! I hope we miss it this winter. All the beech tree leaves haven't come down yet , but it takes weeks to clean them all up. I go out one day and the next day its just as bad! At the moment its cold sunny days here , which I enjoy. I love to get wrapped up well and get out there and work! The best time of year is the spring. It makes us all feel optimistic about the year ahead. Thanks so much for showing this.

Thank you everyone for looking at the seasons in my garden, so pleased you liked the pictures, the photographic memories are great to look back on. I keep on doing it all winter. It keeps the spirits up over the long dark period of winter. I can keep telling myself that it will all be over soon. Pity the optimism was misplaced last summer lol. but eh ho we survived and we faired better than some did in the wettest parts of the country.

The trees are a good background drop to the garden (80 acres of woodland not ours) nor is the house and garden, well not really 'ours', just loaned we rent our property. The trees can be quite a pain in autumn, especially if the wind blows from the wrong direction. lol. Leaves leaves and more leaves.

I have turned this into something for me to enjoy and hopefully when we no longer live here someone else will love it as much as I have done. I do think that we should all make as much as we can from our surrounds regardless of whether we own the area or not, one of the most inspiring places I have seen on tv was an area that was waste land and the people who lived in and around in this area took it over and planted it up and made a community garden. What a wonderful idea, I know not everyone enjoys my style of gardening so no doubt it will be changed in years to come but for the time being I love it and enjoy myself in it.

Thank you all again for looking and enjoying my pictures, it is so encouraging to have people make comments - it makes all the hard work all worthwhile when others appreciate it too. Thank you :O)

What a lovely blog - I enjoyed that! :-) Thanks for the photos through the year. I really should try to do the same next year, it makes a real 'diary' to look back on.

Thank you Melchi and thank you Spritzhenry, it certainly is great to be able to look back on the year, this was something I had promised myself to do for my own pleasure too. lol it does make you realise that eventually the plants do recover from whatever the weather throws at us. Just hoping it does not throw too much of the white stuff at us this year though. lol. I do like snow but only when it is crisp and clean and you can walk out on a lovely bright day and see your footprints - I hate it when it starts to go and everything turns to mush and sludge. lol ah well what will be will be I suppose. I shall curl up in front of my log fire and knit if it gets too bad and keep watching the birds fighting for their pecking rights. Thanks again for looking in :O)

I expect you'll be knitting yourself a lovely woolly jumper to snuggle up in! Lol

Rose I am busy knitting baby things for a friends baby who is expected around the middle of January, so excited about him, he will be spoiled rotten when he gets here. lol. :O) Just finished him a lovely warm blanket off to knit him a jacket in blue next, with a hoody. lol. It is so exciting knitting baby things again. x I never knit for me, everyone else but never for me. lol. strange isn't it I do not like knitting things for myself. OH has got a new jumper and the girls will get new ones when I have finished knitting the baby jacket. It keeps me out of mischief through the winter. x
