Budgies - Especially for Terra.

I know that this is not strictly gardening, but I guess most of you know that I am some kind of ‘Bird Nut’ LOL and that I rescue abused, unwanted and battered birds, plus any wild birds who come my way. Luckily I can send some of those back to the wild who are not too damaged. I have two Pigeons I can’t as they wouldn’t make it. I am at my full quota now and cannot take any more Parrot types as it would spoil it for the rest…………….well, maybe a very tiny one! I know Terra would like to see them, I don’t have a really yellow one like Crocus, Terra, but Tiny is as near as I can get LOL.

I’ve always had a Budgie, one at a time, but not until I started doing the rescue and had around 6 at a time, did I realise how naughty, quarrelsome and destructive they are – I call mine my Demolition Squad! Anything they can possibly get the tip of a beak into, they will destroy. They are gradually getting the tiles off the walls which I took great pains to put on, thinking it would look nice. Nice!! Budgies don’t do nice, they do destruct!! Saying this, they are so comical and entertaining, despite what they do, you cannot be unhappy around a Budgie with their non-stop chattering and silly antics. Mine are mostly old now, but I have a couple of youngish ones keeping the others on their toes. I hang bungees up for them for fun, how do they repay me? They climb to the very top and gradually take all the ceiling coating off, chew around the hook and eventually the whole lot crashes to the floor frightening the living daylights out of the other birds they share with. They share with Cockatiels, a Kakariki, Rosa Bourkes, Pacific Parrotlet and used!! to share with two Canaries and two Finches. They did this happily for a couple of years and then decided that it was fun to bite the feet of the smaller birds, who have now had to go into a large cage and hang on the wall. Suffice to day that Dickie Dove did not take kindly to being mated by one of them, Dickie is perfectly happy to share his space with the two Quails – darned Budgies don’t come into the equation, so he soon got rid of the little pest. The little ‘pest’ learned his lesson and Dickie leads a peaceful existence and ‘pest’ stays up with the others.

All in all, they all get together quite happily. I would love for my birds to have a garden aviary, but I am not in a secure enough place for that to happen, so they have to stay indoors which doesn’t seem to bother them one iota. I get so many passers by stopping me to say how they love to hear them all chattering when they pass by, which is rather nice. I could offer then a cleaning rota if they need something to do LOL.

They are lovely and all look very happy. They are such animated, cheerful birds.

Thank you both - they are a happy little bunch on the whole :o)

Your budgies have beautiful markings and colours...
Apart from one budgie trying to mate Dickie Dove, do any of the budgies pair off and try to produce baby budgies ? :o)

a lovely blog Pam.

Thanks Sue. They now and again have a go when the hormones kick in Terra, but I really do think that I have a selection of 'gay' Budgies LOL. Only Whitey and one of the Musketeers are palled up, the rest all go around together :o) At the moment I have two eggs laid by a pair of my Cockatiels, they have pinched the little hideaway I made for the Quails to go to bed in. I have been in and pricked the eggs. There are far too many unwanted pet birds growing old in Pet Shops, I do not want to add to that. Also, I don't think I could part with any to a Pet Shop if I allowed it, so better this way. They sit on them for a while and then give up and carry on with life as before.

Good luck to you and your gay budgies... Lol. :o)
as you say, too many unwanted pet birds in the world already... don't want to make more...

Lovely blog, Pamazon! The yellow budgie reminds me of one my dad used to have many years ago. It would sit on his shoulder & nibble at his earlobe, on occasions it would draw blood too! He used to keep many budgies & let them out of their cage at the weekends then, when it came to putting them back in, we would all spend half an hour or more trying to capture them!

When I lived in Spain my wife & I had 3 budgies. One was very old & another was very young. My wife often let them out of their cage to walk around the table. The young one would often nibble her pens while she was trying to write & if she tried to shoo him away he would "scold" her! You really get to see that most animals have a distinct character all of their own, just like any human! We had a lot of fun with them.

Great stories, Balcony... and wonderful budgie memories :o)

29 Aug, 2009

That's a great story Balcony, each one has a different character as you say.. Many years ago I had a blue one called Peter and we used to have a small table and put all his toys on there. He loved Orange and Red ones, he would pick them up and drop the lot on the floor ready for us to pick up again. We would sneak a white one in sometimes and he would get absolutely furious, didn't the poor white toy and ourselves get it in the neck from him LOL.

Budgies love to drop things deliberately, don't they...

Crocus has an enclosed bird bath which I fix to the front of his cage each day. It has no water, but is full of little plastic men etc. ...

I call this bath his annexe ... Lol.

He chats up the toys in the bath, especially those with mirrors, and then, just when he thinks the toy is impressed with him, grabs it by the neck and chucks it onto the floor of his cage with gusto. Each toy lands with a very loud bang, which can be heard around the house...

Every evening I return the toys to the bath and remove it from the cage... ready to repeat the whole procedure the next day... :o)

LOL, that's like mine was, it keeps them happy doesn't it? I have toys like that for the smaller parrots, you fill them with bits and bobs, all get thrown out and I put them back again. I love the bath 'annexe' LOL.

Oh, I missed it, I guess it was the Ring Necks, I think in time they will want to cull them as they do in the USA, they are very prolific breeders - my Billy-Whizz in an Indian Ring Neck.,

4 Sep, 2009

Yes, it was the ring-necks... I thought by mentioning the show on this blog you would be alerted to it....

I've just discovered it is on You tube ... google BBC parakeet invasion...

I think I've seen it before on TV. I've just watched it again. A brother of mine keeps Parakeets. I don't think he would ever let them go wild!

I had a friend down South who kept Quakers, he was out in a small village in the country and he let his Quakers out each day and they flew all around the countryside, but always came back at night to be fed and to sleep in their aviary. His partner died and I lost touch with him, so will never know what happened to them all.........:o(

Lovely blog Sandra, I never realised you rescued birds. Must have a look through your stuff. It's afull time job just finding out about people on here isn't it? I had 2 budgies when a child. Joey was green and had no flight feathers so always looked like a chick. he used to like sitting on my head nibbling my hair in a preoccupied way, and when he'd had enough would just flutter to the floor. His best friend, Stormy, named because of his beautiful stormy blue colours loved him. We used to think that he thought Joey was his baby as he used to feed him, they shared a cage. On reflection he may have thought of him as his mate as I believe it is also a mating ritual, but he never mounted him. Stormy used to love flying round the room, but was never one of those very tame birds. They lived together happily for very many years.

It's me, Pam, not Sandra who does the birds BA LOL. I'm in the West Midlands too. I had my very first Parrot in 1971 and have been hooked ever since. I have a Photobucket with all my birds and dogs on, if you have any time to spare, you can see some of them on there.

Amongst my Male Budgies I have three who spend their whole time together despite there being females there too, they just love each other.....:o)
