We're experiencing fewer butterflies this year too Bornagain. We used to get alot of Monarch butterflies, but scientists say that they changed their migratory route due to lack of host plants and food. I rarely get to see one anymore. If I'm lucky enough to catch one on camera this year, I'll be sure to post a pic of it.

We still have the milkweed in the field beside us...been keeping an eye...but haven't seen any butterflies! Do you think the fact that it's been a wet summer could have anything to do with it as well?

Here in England, a lot of insecticides and other poisonous substances are used . I think people forget that to have butterflies you need caterpillers! I don't think this can be the only cause of the decline which I have noticed over the past 7 years or more. The only ones I see in any numbers (albeit small) are the cabbage whites. I have a photo somewhere from 13 0r 14 years ago of a friends buddleia, the flowers of which are almost totally hidden by butterflies of many varieties. It's so sad :-(

Bornagain - I'm surprised you haven't seen many butterflys this year - here in Hereford there seem to be loads this year! Painted Ladys and Peacocks seem to have done very well, although I haven't seen any Tortoise Shells at all....

Sid, you've obviously lured all of ours there! My mothers family were from Hereford, it's a lovely county, but can't quite compete with Walsall:-))

Yup, you've found me out - I lured all of Walsall's butterflys to my garden with promises of huge budlejhas and lots plants for catapillars to eat - my garden is easy to find - just follow the cries of "aaaahhgg - ger' off me cabbages!" LOL

Appreciate that Anchorman, I didn't take any photos of the butterflies or garden this year. I've been doing alot of remodeling in the house and really let the garden go, but I still had plenty of butterflies to bring a smile to my face when I did get a chance to go outside for a walk in the garden. Luckily for me the butterflies weren't partial to only neat kept gardens... They didn't care if it was a mess or not....lol.
