I've just planted one, Gee! People have told me about yours - so here I am!

Did you get any berries, and have the leaves started to change colour yet?

5 Nov, 2009

No, Spritz, I didn't get any berries, I was quite disappointed. I have cut the plant down this year as it was getting very bare at the bottom and new growth was coming up from the base. Hope it survives! I have another Nandina called Firepower which has better coloured leaves and is more compact. It is on page 14 of my photos entitled Ceonothus replacement. In fact I have two Firepowers now as I liked them so much :)

I've had 'Firepower' for a few years, Gee - I think it doesn't get enough light, as it has never coloured up as it should. :-(( I'm considering moving it. Does yours take a more exposed position? Where I can move it to, it would get a bit of wind.

Both of my Firepowers are in a border close to the house so I suppose they are quite sheltered. The larger one has a conifer near it which gives shelter too. The small one is very red, the other not so much.

Oh dear, Gee. I don't know where I could plant them (two!) to have a sheltered but light position! I suppose it's worth a try with one, anyway. :-(

Just seen this - how did you get on with it in the end plese? How big did it get?

8 Aug, 2014

It went mad, Steragram, putting up suckers all over the place. I eventually had to move it when I made garden changes and it never took off where I replanted it and eventually just disappeared! I tried growing some of the suckers but they were unsuccessful too. Strangely enough, last week I bought another one (because I do like them) but I will put it in a pot and see how it goes. I never did get any berries on the previous one.

How disappointing, it's such an attractive shrub. Better luck next time - you could always perhaps use a root barrier?

12 Aug, 2014

Good idea, why didn't I think of that? I really would like it in a bed at the end of the garden which is due for revamping this autumn :)

12 Aug, 2014

I hope your revamping happens better than my planned ones do - I can never remember what I was going to do - ought to make a note of all the inspirations I get through the season!
