Petrea volubilis - Sandpaper Vine - flowers up-close

The Petrea produces long racemes of between 15 and 30 flowers ... the flowers only last for a few days and then fade to grey. The true flower is actually that lovely deep purple thing that rests in amongst the calices - and one of those has a white splash in the middle. These tiny little flowers drop off after a couple of days and those calices are left to fade to a grey colour.

Thanks all - it certainly is a lovely flower ... it's just a shame that I have to climb up very high to see it this close. Still, it does look lovely draped over the top of the Sterculia during spring.

It's beautiful! I don't suppose they would grow in the UK?

I'm sure it will Amano - this climber grows quickly and puts on a fabulous display.

Claireinbude - this one is a climber that loves full sun, warmth and humidity. When it has those conditions it will grow quite large and can reach over 30 feet. It's quite frost tender and from what I've read - it will grow in cold climates as long as its container grown ... but will only reach maybe 10 feet ... and to bloom well, it needs around 8 hours of full sunshine.

Bernieh:
You're not kidding about how large they can grow -- I've seen these viny/shruby plants more than 50 feet / 16 meters tall. They are extremely showy in flower!

Love their show - purple of course being one of my favourite garden colours!

Bernieh:
Yes, their flowers are quite blue-purple!
The Solanum wendlandii - Costa Rican
Nighshade vines are blooming here now...
their flowers are similar to Petrea.

I googled that one - it's very pretty. Are you far from the San Marcos Growers? Every time I google a plant you're mentioning their site comes up with photos and information - they seem to have an enormous catalogue of plants.

Bernieh:
San Marcos Growers is located in Santa Barbara -- which is a 3 hour drive North from San Diego. Many nuseries in California receive their plant stock from them. You're correct they have an enormous plant catalogue.
