Blank canvas

Blank canvas

The fun starts here ! 70+ plants in pots waiting to get their roots into the soil. But the bare-root roses go in first.

Thank you all for your very warm welcome. I stumbled upon this site while Googling a plant name and was amazed by the amount of information, great photos and chat that is here. I was on here for hours last night ! I'm a bit of a Luddite where computers are concerned - reducing the file size of photos, replying to comments etc, but my eldest has promised to try to drag me up to date !!

I am quite new too,and also got a warm welcome .Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.Its great to start with a blank canvas,it will look wonderful when your roses flower next year.We had a blank canvas, and its so much easier than trying to fit plants around the previous owners designs,as not always to your taste.I have dark green fences, which complement more plants and shrubs than you think, especially your roses. Will enjoy watching your progress.

It's great isn't it, likeminded gardeners etc and always someone with an answer to that burning gardening question! I envy your blank canvas above, must be so exciting to be able to start like that. I love the indigenous cottage garden too and I look forward to see more of your photos :)

How exciting, we started our garden from scratch 8 nearly nine years ago now fun time, all that was here was a small woody area, never enough room though, looking where I can pinch a bit more grass for more plants.
I love roses too and have a rose bed with David Austen roses all scented of course, can never see the point of a rose that doesn't smell :-)
Look forward to seeing the progress of your garden.

Yes Simbad, Couldn't agree with you more about Roses and scent. Maybe two exceptions if you twisted my arm, Rosa Glauca (foliage/flowers) and Rosa Moyesii Geranium (flowers/hips) - but only if space allowed.
I have a theory that all lawns are designed to 'shrink' lol !!! ;-)

Couldn't agree more, husband doesn't complain less for him to cut, lol.
Have some seed of rosa glauca a friend sent me,must get round to sowing them, hope they're still OK had them a couple of years.

Wow, you certainly did start off with a blank canvas, didn't you. Looks like you had to do a lot of preparation.

Hi Gill, it did take a while to clear everything out that I didn't want to keep and level the ground. But it's only 36ft x 18ft, so could have been a lot harder. The tough part will be trying to fit a quart into a pint pot - there are so many plants that I would 'like' to grow. :-)

Nice work Muddy! You will be amazed what you can stuff into this space! Any plans for a particular theme? Tropical? Cottage? Japanese? etc. etc....? Looking forward to the trasformation pictures!

Hi Karen, I suppose I do lean towards the cottage theme. I did intend to grow some veg in amongst the flowers until Genuisscuffy opened my eyes to 'Square foot gardening'. So watch this space ! :-)
