Amaryllis 'Black Pearl'

Amaryllis 'Black Pearl' (Hippeastrum)

The first stem only has two flowers, but there's another one to come. I love the dark red colouring.

Thanks - 'Illusion' is pink, but the petals should be shaded. I'm looking froward to that!

didnt realise was so many barbara, ive been looking and some very pretty ones, bigger the bulb the better apparently, more flowers

7 Jan, 2010

lovely rich red!

7 Jan, 2010

True, Sandra...the ones I keep from previous years don't seem to produce two stems - if I'm lucky, I get one stem. In the GCs they tend to keep just the most popular ones, like 'Red Lion' and 'Apple Blossom'. It seems a shame when there are so many others.

Thanks! I thought it was lovely in the catalogue and even better now it has flowered! :-))

Do you grow these, Carol?

Lovely Amaryllis! They are so easy to get to flower. Just pot them up - but DONĀ“T cover more than 2/3 bulb with compost or it will rot! Shop bought bulbs flower within 2 months of being planted.

I was given a bright red one for Christmas, 1981, by my sister & I took it with me when we moved back to Spain in August 1982. It then multiplied faster than many weeds!!! I had so many bulbs I didn't know what to do with them! They all flowered every year & I've dozens of photos of them including a couple where I had propped up a photo album against several pots of them in bloom showing photos of them in bloom from previous years!!!

Once we went to visit some cousins of my wife's who lived in a village about 3/4 hour away by train On our way back home my wife took a picture of me asleep on the train. Of course I had no idea about that & when we got home I took a photo of several Amaryllis bulbs whose flowers had opened while we were out. The film must have jammed in the camera because they came out over the top of me in the train! I look like a ghostly figure behind them!!!

If you have a look at my blogs one of the very first I wrote was on Amaryllis. There you will find some tips on how to get them to flower for you year after year.

My seedling Amaryllis should finally flower this year. I have posted several pics where you can see them bursting out of their 6" pots. It's taken at least four years & I'm on "hot Coals" waiting for them to produce their very first flowers!

i have 3 stems of what look like the same flower spritz. hubby bought them for me at the weekend to cheer me up. they are a lovely deep blood red.

11 Jan, 2010

Nice one Barbara, I am very fond of the Amaryllis.

12 Jan, 2010

Balcony - you really have got a lot of patience! :-)

Nice to know that other people like Amaryllis - it's a bulb that I have to grow each year, for the beautiful blooms in winter.

12 Jan, 2010

So am I to believe this is a true Amaryllis or a Hippeastrum? well whatever it is it is a fantastic colour lol

13 Jan, 2010

Thanks, Dd. I think we're meant to call it a Hippeastrum, but I can't get used to that, so I'll stick with the 'A' word. ;-)

14 Jan, 2010

I don't blame you lol

19 Jan, 2010

Spritzhenry is right, the official name in Hippeastrum. Nevertheless, it's very rare to find it under that name, it's almost always referred to as Amaryllis. Even the specialist growers call them Amaryllis! I got a catalogue from the USA a few days ago & I went through every page & I couldn't find Hippeastrum anywhere in it!

The flowers are sheer bliss to see! I was going to putt heir web address on here so you could visit their webpage & see for yourself the many different kinds they have for sale. I can't find the catalogue now so I can't put their web address here.

20 Jan, 2010

Hahaha - so I'm not the only one that loses things! Do you put them 'somewhere safe'? ;-O

20 Jan, 2010

Well, of course! Where else would you put them???

23 Jan, 2010

:-)))

23 Jan, 2010

I haven't found that place "Somewhere safe" yet but I did get an email from the company that the catalogue came from in the USA.

http://www.amaryllis.com.

They have flowers there that make you eat your heart out!

26 Jan, 2010

Oooh! I'll have a drool tomorrow! :-)
