Dont tell Baz, lol. I got mine about about 10 years ago from good old Woolworths, just bare rooted and tiny but they've done well and keep surviving, I started mine off in pots like yours until they became root bound and then I set them in the ground. I love those deep red ones too, the colour of a good glass of red wine.

thanx dotty, is yours a bush or standard, this looks like a bush as not a long stem, do you prune yours ;o))
gina i dont blame him, i love them to, shame they drop their leaves in winter though , thanx ;o)

We bought one and its just below our rockery its red acer so was wandering if I should place a bamboo to give it some strength to help it grow firm?
21 Apr, 2010
i have a deep red one gina, a standard and its been fine, when windy i just move the pot cause its light enough for me to move, i guess it would help if its young and in open possition, my new one is in open site and not sure about the wind and it getting burnt leaves,
21 Apr, 2010
I think its best to be safe and place a bamboo to keep it sturdy as its in an open space with little help against winds....
21 Apr, 2010
it cant hurt gina and wont show if you cut it to size ;o)
21 Apr, 2010
Thank you for that advise Sandra looks like we may have a nice weekend so will be out potching again in the garden see what I can do lol
21 Apr, 2010

ahhhhhh sounds good its the same here as it was yesterday sunny but with a windchill we found that it got very cold later on in the evening, still nice to see the sun instead of grey clouds and rain rain rain lol. Have fun indoors then today Sandra

San ours is a bush, and we dont prune it at the moment, as we want it to grow a lot bigger yet.
21 Apr, 2010
thanx dotty, i want this to get bushy to, so will leave it and just nip the dead bits of after winter.

ยง;+))

I have the same one Sandra and mines about the same size as yours, they are real stunners! :o)
25 Apr, 2010
yes they are sandra, do you cover in winter or have you just got it this year, says may need protection if in pot.
25 Apr, 2010
My Acer was outside in the winter Sanbaz but I stood it next to the house wall for some protection, although if you have a car port put it under there. I prune back in the winter and just cut it back a bit then in March you can see a bit of die back wood at the tips so I usually just snap that off with the pruners. Don't overwater but don't let the pot dry out if it' s in the sun. Hope this helps.....x
27 Apr, 2010
thanx linda yes it helps , i will just try to water around the small plants around it rather than the acer to much, its in a shady part so doesnt dry out to quicky anyway ;o))
