Yes Drc .. as San. says they are white fantails .... the male one arrived 1 year ago last sept. almost 2yrs. now ( Snowball ) and stayed permanently . .. my hubby built the nesting box at that time .. he was on his own until he brought his mate back a few weeks ago ( Snowdrop ) we are so excited that they are using the nesting box , they seem to be taking it in turns to sit on the eggs ... I am keen to find out if the young ones will stay or be banished to find their own home ! .. ..it's lovely to be able to watch them .. :o))

A couple who live near me have a dove cote in their garden and have loads of doves now so perhaps the young will stay around and multiply :) When I last spoke to him about his doves he said he has ended up with too many! Apparently you can control the breeding by replacing the eggs with dummy eggs a week after they are laid. I believe they only lay a couple of eggs each time but quite regularly!!

Can't wait to hear what happens!

Thanks everyone . .
You've got me worried Gee , is my excitement going to turn to despair , will we have far more than we wanted ? I don't know when you could substitute an egg they are always sitting on it , I don't even know what size the eggs are, Ah well we will worry about that when it happens ... I could always take the nesting box down ... did your neighbours tell you how long it takes for the eggs to hatch Gee .. ?

Oh Amy thankyou for that tantalising glimpse of the happy couple....Your very own flock of white doves ! Dont worry too much...think it would be a few years before it became a problem..even then..well nature has its own way of control doesnt it.....

Thanks Ray .. I hope you are right , I'm so looking forward to seeing the chicks .. they have been doing the change over approx every 2hrs. in the day ..when Snowball is ' off duty ' he still works by fetching nice little pieces of soft straw like grass from one particular clump of grass ... when Mrs. is ' off duty ' she lays on the roof and sunbathes ..LOL... typical ..

LOL...about right Amy if I may say so. A neighbour in the village has had a pair of fantails for a couple of years..living in a dovecote. Will ask about them...although think in that time they have only had a couple of young....

I think they hatch in about 18 days (give or take a day!), Amy. Isn't it exciting?

29 Apr, 2010
Thanks TT . we didn't think this would ever happen , Hubby can't believe the box he made is actually being used after all this time .. .. :o))

Great news ! If they keep laying, I wonder if you can treat them as Hens - you know, eat the eggs ? :-)
30 Apr, 2010
LOL.. interesting thought Muddy ., we do know that all the grand old houses had Dovecotes for meat I don't know if they used the eggs as well .!
30 Apr, 2010
Yes, that's what I was wondering. I have to admit the thought of eating 'squab' doesn't make my juices flow ! :-))
30 Apr, 2010
I can't say I fancy it either , although I woudn't mind somebody taking some of these pigeons away and putting them in a pie ..!
