Just a thought, Toto - do grass snakes eat them? There was a big one in the pond last week and I know they eat frogs and newts among other things. I hope her mate is ok.

Thanks :-)))

I've never heard of a grass snake eating one but I don't see why they wouldn't especially when they are young. I'll check in one of my books to see what it says.

Will be interested to know, Toto.

Lovely slow worm, thought it was a smooth snake but looked closer and its a slow worm. Legless lizard. We used to get these when we lived on the Isle of WIght. lovely little creatures.

None in Derbyshire, Linda?

Never seen a slow worm here, but they do grow to about 18 inches long and it's eyes have movable lids. It has ear openings and can shed it's tail just like a lizard when threatened. They have up to 20 young. They shed their skin just like a snake even though they are lizard gender. Thought you'd be interested in these few facts Wagger.

The only bits of that I knew were the tail shedding - one of our adults is like that - and skin shedding, seen one (skin that is). Great to know more about them, thanks Linda.

We used to have a lot of these, not seen any for at least 3 years.

That's sad! Perhaps they are just hiding very well.

It may be because we are now too tidy, having a small garden you have to be....:*(

Perhaps they've moved into a neighbour's garden I'm sure they're still thriving somewhere. :-)

I do hope so......
