I'd love to grow nothing but edibles really, Amy. With some beneficial flowers, too, of course. Keep phoning/messaging my local Coucil now and then to re-terate their commitment to provision of allotments as part of the local plan, and in keeping with the current maifesto for more provision of "grow-your-own" space. Manifestos/environmental/health/ clauses, however, seem to escape, under the umbrella of budgetary cutbacks, etc. :-((

Thanks Eileen , Carole we do enjoy our fruit and veg I love going out with my basket and picking whatever we have that's ready ...
David that is so annoying , I would have thought it would have been a priority with so many people eating unhealthily that they would do their utmost to encourage growing and eating good food .. . my son loves his allotment he spends hours there with his boys , I do hope they are able to provide some in the near future , it would be nice if a local land owner would be willing to donate an area for this purpose ... ~~~

Our Council has tried quite hard, Amy. I wrote/e-mailed several times to ask about giving over a corner of some local parks for allotments, as was done during both World Wars (albeit, from necessity, of course). The Council, in partnership with the local allotments action group, after a great deal of work and research, submitted plans for 32 allotments in a far corner of a local park earlier this year, with communal tea-room, sheds, water by mains, etc, supplied. Sadly, the Council had to give in to its very own planning dept, who had received too many objections from dog-walkers and folks used to having picnics in that area. The High School, which adjoins the proposed siter, even did a project on this, and came to the conclusion that the allotments would have enhanced a community spirit crossing any age "barriers", provided skills for pupils,(not just gardening and groweing edibles, but art and photography, too, among others).
I do think that our Council members are as sick as we are, about this! :-(((

David . you were the first person on my mind this morning :o)) there's an article in our local newspaper saying ...
Money raised from taxes on rubbish dumped in landfill sites should be used to help people set up allotments for growing their own food on disused land , council leaders urge ....
The Local Government Ass . is to change the rules to enable town halls to meet the spiralling demand for allotments in many towns and cities ..
The organisation said an estimated 200,000 allotments had been lost over the last 30 years , with waiting lists as long as 10 years in some parts of the country .
Well that's the gist of it , it would seem it's a problem here as well ... ..
It's a poor do when people would rather walk their dogs than see an area being used productively by the community , you can walk a dog or have a picnic almost anywhere but you can't grow food anywhere ....
