The stacked stones are actually slate which I picked up individually from a river in Snowdonia in North Wales, which had been smoothed by the current of the water. They are remnants of the slate mining era.

we saw lots of slate while in wales to, picked a couple of nice pieces from the roadside but wasnt sure if you could help yourself if on private or national park areas, here in blackpool we cant help ourselves to pebbles off the beach now, could at one time,

Hello Sanbaz, Many of the pieces of slate were taken from the river beneath the slate slag tips at Blaenau Ffestiniog, I don't think anybody cares there. The town in literally living on mountains of slate. It is so difficult to find tumbled slate in nurseries. I really dislike sharp edges. I believe you are not supposed to take slate from the Snowdonia National Park though. Regards, Fabrice

thanx for info mossy, we coulodnt believe the slate mountains, so lovely , will look out for some more when we go again to add to my pond area ;o)
